Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:

I searched all over the web for a system to make my morning cup of coffee. Luckily the only other suitable coffee maker I found was sold out and so I took a chance with the Java Press. I work in Afghanistan and needed something that wasn't going to dominate my limited shelf space. I also wanted something that didn't leave me with an entire pot of coffee that I would drink all day. Finally, I had to be able to clean it easily as I do not have access to a sink.

When I received the Java Press I was surprised at how everything fits inside the press including the drinking cup. My first few trials did not do so well and that is when I learned I was using fine ground coffee- I was getting an excessive amount of grounds at the bottom of my cup. I ordered coarse ground coffee from Peets and ever since the sediment is greatly reduced.

There were some reviews that mentioned the coffee running back along the Press during pouring/serving. This has only happened to me when I did not line up the spout and top correctly after brewing.

I will always have one of these handy, whether I'm home or out in the middle of nowhere!

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:

Be forewarned! My recommendation: its a great idea, but do NOT purchase this product until its been redesigned.

I saw this product at a specialty sporting goods store in Leadville, Colorado and thought that I could finally have my favorite type of coffee (French press) on the trail or at my desk at work. Yes, it makes fine coffee (as expected) but I was extremely disappointed when I poured my first cup and coffee spilled all over the place! If I'd been backpacking and used this without knowing I'd end up having coffee down my sleeve, I'd be furious. It needs to be redesigned. I should not have to retrofit this product with a silcone part from another product (as mentioned by another reviewer).

This is my favorite french press. I even use it at home. It is compact. Everything fits into the press pot, even coffee grounds. The mug keeps your coffee warm and the protective sleeve makes sure you dont burn your hands. And it makes great coffee! Another great product from GSI.

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:

Bought this as a replacement for my current percolator. Everything about it looked great in the store, Compact, looked durable and insulated containers seem like a good idea. My aluminum perk gets cold quickly.

On my at home test everything was fine until I started to pour the coffee. Instantly coffee everywhere. Though I was pouring too fast maybe. started pouring it as slow as possible. Still coffee everywhere. Maybe it was too full. Poured most of it into the cup. Almost all the way through it was trickling down the side of the pot to the bottom. All in all about 2-3 tablespoons probably got away. If you're really careful keep it down to a smaller minimum, but it still "leaks".

The rectangular spout is bad. Not having a lip on the spout is unacceptable.

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:

I hesitated to buy after reading the negative reviews. But I couldn't resist the design (and I had a gift card to spend). I brewed my regular morning coffee for a week to get the levels right. I marked the fill height with a sharpie for 2 cups etc. When filled 2/3 (about two mugs) the plunger worked great and it poured cleanly each time. (It did spill when I filled it to the top.)

The cup works well, but the lid opening is too small which leads to dribbling (which cost the fifth star). I mostly use without lid.

I love this innovative product and can't wait to take it on the trail and leave the Foldger's teabags at the store.

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:

Great concept and reasonably priced from a great company, and I was looking forward to some fresh pressed joe from a nice, compact, self-contained unit. Does it make great coffee? You bet--but I would enjoy it more if 50% of the coffee I had just made didn't end up down my arm, on the ground and all over the neoprene sleeve. Fast pours simply do not help avoid spills, they just make them a little more violent. Extremely frustrating when you're doing everything you can to avoid food spills in the backcountry and every pour is like ringing the dinner bell for all kinds of critters.
Back to the drawing boards, guys! Fix that spout on the press and, while you're at it, make the cup spout a little larger; one shouldn't have to suck the piping hot coffee out of the tumbler. Overall, pretty disappointing product from an otherwise top-notch outfit in GSI.

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:

As far as making a good cup of coffee, this press works as well as any other I have tried. However, the thing is very sloppy when pouring and requires Herculean strength to press. The gasket that keeps the grinds seperate is also kind of a pain as it traps grinds that are difficult to remove and gets mucked up as a result. The plastic on the presser component (the part with the screen) also warped on mine from the heat and pressure (at least I think that is why, but maybe also due to stuck grinds in the gasket). Though the coffee is good, the functionality suffers in the unit I purchased. I will be returning it soon.

Comments about GSI Personal Java Press Coffee Maker:

I would have rated this a five if the product allowed you to pour coffee without it running down the side. It made great coffee and did it much faster than a peculator type maker when car camping. I used a regular grind for a drip coffee maker and had no issues with grinds in my coffee.

Best of all, this thing packs up nice and tight to take up little space on your pack.

Great product, but be careful when you pour. Wasted coffee is a NO NO.

At first I thought this product was great for how compact it was. Yes, it does make a great cup of coffee, is lightweight, and durable. However, it has one major flaw. Every time that I go to pour a cup, it drips down the side into the sleeve and all over onto the floor. Kind of a drawback for me.
