    Comments about GSI Telescoping Foon:

Emphasis on CHEAP. I just ordered this. I didn't read what it is made out of prior to ordering. The picture looked like aluminum. It is made from something they call coplyester and acetal. It seems like flimsy plastic. I'll give it a try on my next backpacking trip, but I don't expect much durability.

    critical equipment that could break

    Comments about GSI Telescoping Foon:

The spork portion broke from the handle on day 2 of a 4 day hike. Fortunately, another team member had a replacement simple plastic spork I could use.

It may not seem essential, but not having a utensil when eating the dehydrated backpacker food is fairly inconvenient.

I will be buying a more reliable solution next time.

    Comments about GSI Telescoping Foon:

I use this product frequently on hiking and fishing trips. It is compact and fits well in my dualist mess kit. However, it could use some significant improvements. 1. It is difficult to clean the grooves on the back. 2. It is relatively difficult to lock and unlock (the unlock is particularly annoying as I frequently skin my thumb when it unlocks suddenly). 3. First time users try to flip it open instead of sliding it open (that's how one of mine was broken). The foon should be redesigned to pivot open which would likely eliminate all of the issues with it while retaining all the positive benefits.

    Comments about GSI Telescoping Foon:

Hand this to a friend and the first thing they'll do is try to slide the handle closed while holding the spoon with their other thumb and forefinger. The handle will slip quickly and is just the right height and angle to slide under their thumbnail - slicing it open. Mine lasted about 15 uses before the handle broke off. Otherwise it's a good spoon, as long as you are careful when closing the handle.

    Comments about GSI Telescoping Foon:

Great product for what it is. Its light and is compact enough to fit inside my small solo stove/pot kit. I only use it for backpack meals, not soup (which I would probably drink anyway) and I don't use it to get into the meal pouch - I dump the cooked contents out into a bowl. The extended foon is short which I like, but would not be good for trying to eat the contents of a meal from the pouch. Probably why other reviewers have said its hard to clean, which I haven't had issue with. I think its a limited use item - essentially for eating a meal from a plate or bowl. I was previously carrying a larger, longer spoon (and fork) in which to mix meal contents and eat from the pouch. Found that the larger utensils were a pain to pack and that I did not prefer eating contents of meal from pouch - so this little thing works for me.

    Comments about GSI Telescoping Foon:

I took it backpacking and it did what it was supposed too. It's neat that it fits inside my GSI Dualist cooking set (2 inside with a primus stove) I bought them because at that time it wasn't included with the cooking set but they are now.

The picture shows the Foon fully extended. Closed- the handle overlaps the spork head. Like another reviewer said they are hard to clean. The backside is a groove where the handle slides out of to become longer and I got food in it and it's hard to clean out. The specs says it extends out to 6 inches. I ate the typical FD Mountain House bags and these are still not quite long enough for me. I still had my fingers get a little messy from the sides of the bag. Because of that though it is a little hard to slide it in and out. It does seem a little flimsy but I don't need it to do much other than stir my food and eat it.

I think I'm going to get the long REI titanium spoon to replace this. It's not going to fit inside my kit which I personally enjoyed but I'd rather not get my fingers dirty from my food.

      Comments about GSI Telescoping Foon:

I like it because it is small and can be packed with my cookset and it's very light. Even though its plastic it is tuff. When I first got it I didn't think it would last but its still going after many backpacking trips. I don't like that it is hard to clean on the backside with the grooves for sliding.
