Comments about Life is good Mobile Homey Dog Bed:
I purchased this product hoping it would provide a compact, comfortable travel alternative to the Canine Hardware travel beds I purchased from REI last year. The Life Is Good Mobile Homey is a bit smaller (1080 sq. in.) than the Canine Hardware (1170 sq. in.) travel bed and NOT a good option for larger dogs (over 55 or 60 lbs.) or large dog breeds needing adequate room for longer legs and backs (malamutes, greyhounds, wolfhounds, huskies, shepherds, collies, Bernese, Pyrenese, St. Bernards, etc.).
The LIG Mobile Homey is fairly easy to clean, but does not clean as easily or as well as the Canine Hardware beds (just toss them into the wash - no covers to remove). After several washings in warm water (cold rinse) and air drying, the Homey's fleece cover has started to lose its shape and seems to have shrunk a bit, making it more difficult to put back onto the bed. The webbing straps don't make clean up a picnic, either, and they're one more thing to fuss with keeping out of the way so the straps & plastic buckles don't get chewed by bored dogs. (Removable straps would be nice. I remove the plastic buckles when traveling to cut down on the allure of "party favours," but they're not easy to thread back onto the straps if you have arthritic hands.) As for dirt and hair - both beds are dirt and hair magnets, but what do you expect with fleece and polyester? Both beds can be tossed into the dryer using the AIR setting for 5-10 minutes for easy hair removal.
As a camping bed, the Mobile Homey lacks adequate padding for comfort and joint support (same as the Canine Hardware travel beds). The moisture-resistant woven poly coated base offers more protection from the damp & cold than the ripstop nylon base on the Canine Hardware travel beds, but the lack of adequate padding for cushion and comfort left my canine companions feeling the cold seep up from the ground through this bed.
For all of the above reasons, I WOULD NOT recommend this bed to anyone as a canine camping bed for tent, RV or car camping. I would only use the Homey for a canine camping bed with a supplemental sleeping pad underneath for added support/cushion and protection from the cold ground. (Just to give readers a general idea...my dogs preferred my sleeping bag and Therma-a-rest Pro Lite Plus sleeping pad to the Homey and Canine Hardware travel beds, and they are NOT spoiled dogs. If your dogs are like mine, buy the large sleeping pad so you have room to share, or better still, get them their own sleeping pads!)
As a top pad for a theraputic foam bed at home, or to place under a foam core sit pad or camp seat in the car when traveling, the Mobile Homey dog bed is adequate...but only just. For comfort and support, the Homey is as big a disappointment as the Canine Hardware travel bed - but take heart, you don't have to ditch the bed and call it wasted money on a bad learning experience!
I purchased several of REI's Standard Blue Foam sit pads to line the back of my SUV and one Therm-a-Rest Camp Seat for each dog to place under a Canine Hardware or Homey bed while traveling. At 41x41x5 cm (16x16x2 inches), the Therm-a-Rest Camp Seats provide a large, supportive, thick solid core foam base for the inadequate, wimpy padding in the Life Is Good Mobile Homey and Canine Hardware travel beds.
The combination of blue foam sit pads and Therm-a-Rest camp seats was the best way to ensure maximum comfort while still having an "easy to clean" combination of bedding products for travel and camping. (The standard blue foam sit pads and Therm-a-Rest camp seats can be easily cleaned and disinfected with a little dishwasher detergent and warm water, just like my Chaco sandals! The foam sit pads and camp seats air dry quickly, or towel dry in minutes with those sham-wow things.)
To ensure comfort and joint support for long trips like our cross-country drive with the occasional overnight stay in a pet-friendly hotel, I placed the LIG Mobile Homey and Canine Hardware travel beds on top of a double layer of REI's Standard Blue Foam sit pads and the Therm-a-Rest camp seats (one per dog) for a softer ride...but then I want my furry friends to be as comfortable as I am on long drives. Nothing says "I'm well behaved and well travelled" like a row of dogs sitting in front of a check-in desk wearing their Mountainsmith and Granite Gear packs filled with their camp seats and travel beds, and an OllyDog travel bowl hanging out of each mouth.
We have received many warm and friendly greetings from hotel staff and guests on these occasions, and had many opportunities to share thoughts, ideas and experiences with gear and travel over the years. :-)
