The updated Petzl Basic multipurpose ascender works great for hauling systems, for ascending fixed lines and as self-protection when climbing a fixed rope.

  • Chrome-plated, spring-loaded steel cam features angled teeth and a self-cleaning slot to securely grip the rope, even in wet, muddy or icy conditions
  • Cam has been refined to glide more easily along the rope than the previous version, requiring less effort during long sessions of jugging
  • Open/close trigger is now recessed inside the ascender's frame to avoid accidentally opening the cam while in use; trigger can still be operated with 1 hand
  • Includes multiple attachment points to allow for different uses, such as self-belaying or hauling
  • Designed for use with ropes between 8 and 13mm in diameter

Please note: Petzl products can only be shipped to U.S. addresses.

Comments about Petzl Basic Multipurpose Ascender:

This item is an excellent alternate to the more expensive ascenders out there. I bought 1 of those before, and the only difference I noticed is the bit of extra work since this one lacks the hand-grip of the others. It's for those climbers that do not mind a bit of extra work on the rope. I have used it in many ways, and always performed as expected or better.

Comments about Petzl Basic Multipurpose Ascender:

I use this ascender to climb the mast on my sailboat. I am just starting with climbing, and these ascenders are easy to learn with. Would definitely recommend these to any sailors looking for a good and inexpensive ascender. The handled ascender would make climbing and descending easier, but it can be done for less money with these basic ascenders.

I just used this catch to support myself on a 45 degree roof while painting the siding..couldn't have done it without a rope. Catch works perfectly

Comments about Petzl Basic Multipurpose Ascender:

The obvious drawback is the lack of a handle, but when I'm traversing crevasses, I hope not to need it too often. It's small, easily packed, & quicker to put on a rope than tying a prusik with cold fingers. I like that I can get my harness rigged to the rope fast, then hang comfortably while I deal with the logistics of ascending the rope.

In short, it compromises the functionality of a handle for size & weight. If you're going to be ascending fixed ropes, upgrade.
