    • Drip rings help keep hands and lap dry

Comments about Werner Kalliste Paddle - Carbon Bent-Shaft:

i love this paddle, yes it is a little pricey but i think it is worth it! It is so light and the bent shaft takes a lot of pressure off the wrists and helps for a more powerful stroke.

Comments about Werner Kalliste Paddle - Carbon Bent-Shaft:

I bought my wife one of these due to her arthritis. After trying it I decided to purchase one for myself also. This paddle is an absolute joy to handle for long periods of time. The shape of the paddle allows it to dip in and out of the water without producing a splash, and the foam core lifts the paddle back out of the water. The quality is superb. I may purchase a better boat, but I will never need to upgrade my paddle.

Comments about Werner Kalliste Paddle - Carbon Bent-Shaft:

...but it's worth it! While I am an REI member and frequent shopper, I purchased this paddle from an internet retailer that offered a SIGNIFICANTLY lower price than REI even after the 15% discount on paddles when you buy a boat at REI.

I recently completed Paddle Georgia, a 7 day/82 mile trip with this paddle and I couldn't be happier with it. On our longest day we paddled 18 miles and I was truly thankful for this light paddle! Friends that I made on the trip became covetous of my Kalliste! Because of the carbon fiber and foam core of the Kalliste's blades, some have speculated that it would not be sturdy, but I have to say it has taken a lot of abuse in it's 125+ miles with me and it only has a few cosmetic blemishes--some scratches and a few places where the Werner name has been scraped off. I have staked it into sandbars to anchor my kayak, pushed off of rocks and muddy or sandy beaches, and discovered more than a few rocks hidden just beneath the surface of some muddy Georgia rivers.

The foam core blade makes the paddle extremely buoyant; you have to push hard to submerge it. The foam core also makes the blades feel like they almost pop out of the water.

The bent shaft issue seems to boil down to personal preference and what you're accustomed to. I personally like the bent shaft and have never experienced wrist strain with a bent shaft. Some complain that bent shafts don't give you room to vary your grip for different paddling conditions, but as a 5'4" woman I found plenty of room to move my hands around and still grip the ergo angled sections.

This is a high-quality piece of equipment and you do sometimes get what you pay for. Here's an example of the quality craftsmanship and attention to detail: when you separate the two paddle sections, there is a POP that sounds like a pop gun--the pieces fit together that perfectly! I've read some concerns about getting sand in there and it causing problems with this tight fit but I haven't had that problem even in sandy, silty conditions. Just keep it clean and rinsed and you shouldn't have any trouble.

The only criticism I have--other than the price --is that the black shaft can get pretty hot when left in the sun. On several occasions after it sat in the 95+ degree sun for a while (lunch, swimming breaks, water canon ambushes on passing boats) I had to dunk my paddle in the water to cool it off. But it literally took 4 seconds in the water to cool it off.

I love this paddle and so has everyone who has used it. You will be amazed at how light it is compared to a standard paddle. Go ahead and buy it--you won't regret it!

One more thing--the Werner website has a handy fit guide to help you determine the best paddle for your style and boat. You enter your height, paddling style, boat width and a few other details and the site suggests paddles and lengths to suit you. I found this really handy; maybe you will too:-)
