Comments about New Balance 920 Water Shoes - Men's:
I bought a pair right around the same time as I got a pair of chacos. I wanted to compare the performance for hiking with river crossings and paddling.
What I best about these shoes is how comfortable they are. They really feel great on your feet. Soft, great fit, and easy to walk in. They also offer more protection from pebbles and sticks than I get from my chacos.
In the water the water flows in and out every easily. You don't get that uncomfortable squishy feeling you get with sneakers and socks. They dry out really quickly too which is a big plus. You can even take out the sole for a quick cleaning and drying as well.
I eventually wound up returning them, however. Thank you REI for your wonderful return policy!!
There were a few things that bugged me about 'em. First and foremost, I didn't feel like it had enough traction. The bottom of the shoes are very smooth. From what I understand, the more surface area you have, the better your grip, like with mountain climbing shoes. However, I found myself slipping a lot more on wet rocks as compared to my chacos. Plus they don't have as much gripping power as something with more treads when hiking up dirt, with or without a kayak.
I've seen people wear the Salomon Techamphibians and they look like they have much more treads than these.
If you wind up going for a swim, water flows around the shoe really well. Because of this, I found that my chacos worked better when kicking as the flat footbed acted more like a flipper.
If you're walking through sand or silty water, the dirt doesn't wash out of your footbed as easily as it would as if you're wearing sandals, which can lead to an annoying grinding feeling. With a sandal, it's much easier to filter the gunk out.
Finally, the laces way the laces cinch down is awesome because they're easy to cinch down and release, but the excess laces don't get tucked away well. Unlike traditional shoes with two separate lace ends you tie together, in this one you get a single loop that's supposed to tuck under the little pocket on the front of the tongue of the shoe. However, it flops out way too easily. Even if you try tucking it under the laces, it's annoying and still doesn't guarantee that it won't come out. I didn't like the long loop hanging off my shoes, just waiting to get snagged on something as I walked by as if I my shoes were untied.
Otherwise they really are great shoes. Take a look at the other options though and make sure you weigh your options though.
