Comments about The North Face Prophecy II Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I've gone through two pairs of these shoes now and have to say that they're hard to beat for everyday comfort. I scored the first pair[$] at a Scratch & Dent sale then bought a second pair at full price a year later. I probably would never have picked them in the store because they look a little ugly compared to some of the competition- don't be scared though, they grow on you over time. The best feature is their amazing breathability- my feet just never get sweaty in these. They are also extremely light weight and comfortable. I use them as everyday around town shoes, on my bike, on day hikes, camping, and light trail running. I've had more supportive hikers and trail runners but for an all around shoe, I know I'll never be disappointed throwing these on. They just seem to fit my foot like a glove. As for durability, I've been pleasantly surprised. Eventually the aggressive nubs on the bottom wear out first while the uppers and gluing remain strong to the very end with no disappointing blow-outs ever. I'd say I've gotten a good year of everyday use from each pair. The first pair still mows the lawn every weekend! What do they lack? As I said, I've had better hikers and trail runners. These shoes seem to lack a bit of sole stiffness I need on rockier terrain. Plant a foot on a jagged rock and the shoe definitely deforms to the shape. Also, lateral stiffness is lacking so sidestepping down a steep decent can be a bit scary. I also have gotten used to modern lacing systems such as Salomon or Boa and I now tire of old fashioned knot tying. If you're lazy like me and sometimes try to get away with leaving them tied and slipping in, you'll quickly wear out the heel cups. Finally, the laces: these shoes have a narrow lace that is light and stays tied well but is easy to slice (bike crank) and hard to replace. Your local REI will probably not carry replacements that will fit the narrow eyelets so you'll have to order from North Face which can take forever.I wish the North Face would build this shoe again, put in a little more stability control, add a speed lacing system, and make it a little cooler looking and they'd have a perfect shoe. As is, it's hard to beat for [$]
