Comments about Scott Speedster S30 Bike - 2009:
First the bad - the frame cracked after only a few hundred miles. I was told this wasn't uncommon. Rei and Scott were great in a fast, free and painless replacement - except that the frame I was given as a replacement included the S40 paint scheme. Contrary to the numbering, the S40 is a downgrade from the S30. While I don't care one way or another re paint, I wasn't sure if the frames were identical (and I certainly didn't want a lower grade frame than the one I had originally paid for), so I had to do some research. It turns out they are identical, but having to do the research was not appreciated and I do wonder why they didn't just give me the correct frame setup to begin with. Now here's the review I have with respect to a non-broken bike. The frame is very stiff for great power transfer but still quite comfortable, not jarring at all - probably due to the carbon fork. Great handling on technical descents. The stock gearing is nice for climbing but can be spun out fairly easily even on modest descents. Several nice touches on the bike, for example, the radial spokes on the non-drive side of the rear wheel. Fyi, I weighed my XL frame bike as delivered, plus pedals and bottle cages at 19 pounds. Overall, a really fantastic bike at this price point.I'd defintely rate the bike 5 stars in its working condition.[...] Frame that breaks after a few hundred miles? Big zero.I was surprised such a good all around bike can be had for [$]. Based on my experience, perhaps it is too good to be true. Hopefully, my new frame will last longer.

Comments about Scott Speedster S30 Bike - 2009:
I purchased the S30 as a commuter bike after learning it has the same geometry as my CR1 Pro (& I love my CR1 Pro). The S30 rides, handles, & brakes great. The cassette is a 105 12-25 (although REI's spec sheet says it is a SRAM PG-950 12-26). That said, my favorite locals climbs (15-21% grades) leave me looking for lower gears. Rims are just fine for the price, a little heavy, but no heavier than many other rims around the S30's price range. Tires are wire bead (learned this repairing my first flat with less than 150 miles on the bike), so you can drop a half pound by putting on some kevlar beads. Scott's house brand brakes are fantastic, can't tell the difference between them & the Ultegra brakes on the CR1.
