Comments about Kelty Jr. Tioga External Frame Pack:
We bought two of these packs when we decided that the girls (7&9) needed to carry their own sleeping bags. They have worked out great for our kids 60#/44" and 67#/50". For their first trip they each carried about five pounds. For the final '08 outing, in October, they had worked up to about 9# each. We had no complaints from the troops, as long as I kept an eye on hip belts and ensured that my seven year old clipped her sternum strap. It is well worth the time to vary the width of the shoulder straps, so that they match the shoulders they ride on.

Comments about Kelty Jr. Tioga External Frame Pack:
Bought this for my 6 year-old son for 1-night stays. The pack is roomy inside, not too complicated (4 pockets = not much gets lost), and fits pretty well. The sleeping bag rack on the bottom is perfectly sized for a kid's bag + bed roll. It's light - he can carry his own bag, bed roll, food, clothes, snacks, mess kit, stove, and fuel with room and weight to spare.
We've taken it on several overnighters with 2-3 mile hikes in. Our only complaint: the way it fits on his small body, he can't stand up straight. The frame hits the back of his head if he does. That might be because he's on the small side, might be because we haven't adjusted the straps right.
Adjusting the pack's sizing is easy, and it does really fit kids down to the size it claims to fit. My son was right on the bottom edge.
I'm very happy with this pack. We're going to try a different brand next time (I've got 4 kids to experiment with) just to see if an internal frame is better, but I would happily buy this one again.
