Featuring a custom-moldable hipbelt, Osprey Aether 60 is a superb, lightweight pack for backcountry trips that doesn't compromise comfort for weight.

  • Top-loading pack shaves weight with its lightweight yet tough 210-denier high-tenacity double-ripstop nylon construction
  • AirScape Suspension uses peripheral rods, a nubbed foam backpanel and an internal framesheet
  • High-density polyurethane (HDPE) framesheet and a single stay protect your back from bulky or pointy items and support heavy loads
  • Running down the sidewall, the peripheral rods anchor to load lifter straps and hipbelt, actively transferring load to your hips and resisting sag
  • Providing superior load support is the removable IsoForm CM (Custom Moldable) hipbelt, a 3D dual-density foam contoured and anatomically shaped
  • Osprey certified Custom Molding available in most stores—check your local REI store for a custom hipbelt molding oven
  • ErgoPull hipbelt closure provides extra leverage, drawing tension along top and bottom—not through the center—relieving hipbone pressure
  • Adjustable IsoForm dual-density foam shoulder harness with Spacer Mesh promotes airflow and wicks away moisture during warm weather and intense activity
  • Hydration-compatible design features reservoir sleeve and dual drink tube exit port for on-the-go hydration (reservoir sold separately)
  • Top pocket can be removed and converted into a lumbar pack; IsoForm hipbelt on pack can be removed and slid onto lumbar pack for comfortable carrying
  • Dual-entry side mesh pockets keep essentials easily accessible; built-in front stretch mesh pocket accepts Osprey Excessories for added capacity
  • Front compression wings compress the contents of the pack, whether full or nearly empty, without sag or load distortion
  • Attachment slots, ice axe tool loops, removable sleeping pad straps and extendable lid accommodate a variety of alpine gear

Comments about Osprey Aether 60 Pack:

I found a large Aether 60 on sale at a great price and I needed a lightweight pack for a few days on the AT. (I usually kayak-camp, where I can just toss stuff into dry bags, so this is a bit of a change for me.) This is a top-loading pack, so it's a bit more difficult to get to your gear, but the opening is large and the shape is fairly straight. Unlike the larger sizes of Aethers, there is no bottom compartment where you can put a sleeping bag or tent. The frame is very comfortable and well-padded, while staying quite light. The waist belt is heavenly, even without the custom molding available from REI. A floating cover/detachable bag is very handy. (You can loosen the straps and really jam a lot into this baby.) There are half-a-dozen compression straps on the outside of the pack and the ability to contour/tighten the pack is amazing. The quality of workmanship is great, as I expected from Osprey.

On the downside, this pack is clearly intended to be as lightweight as possible and a few sacrifices have been made to achieve this end. There are only three pockets on the outside of the pack (one on each side and one on the back) and none of them have rain flaps. They are elastic and mesh...hope they hold up to some use. The waist belt has NO pockets or rings whatsoever, so you will almost certainly need a waist pack of some type for those items you need to get to easily while hiking. There are a few scattered cloth and cord loops on the pack itself so you can attach gear and it would have been nice if Osprey had added a couple to the belt, too. In fact, if I were redesigning this pack, I would add four to six plastic D-rings to the pack and one on each side of the belt.

All in all, a comfortable, lightweight pack that holds a lot of gear. Just don't expect to be hanging anything from the belt or clipping much to the exterior.

Comments about Osprey Aether 60 Pack:

This bag is great. I am very picky on bags as designers often get carried away and add neat little doodads here and there that overall add weight and do not improve crucial functions. This bag is just the opposite. Flawless design, ultimate load synching for getting that frame right on your body. No useless zippers and pouches that make noise, add weight, and snag on tree limbs. I can't stress enough how much you can synch the load down and center it. Crucial if you've ever done scrambling or the occasional free climb. Plus I've got my load exactly the same (for the most part) each trip (based on style) so i've cut the excess on the straps and melted the ends and it frees up extra weight there as well. EXCELLENT PACK!!!!!
