Comments about Gregory Z55 Pack:
great, comfortable pack. i personally am not a huge fan of the top-only-loading design, but if you don't mind spending a little time making sure things are in there right, it packs very nicely. a big drawback is that it has no zipper anywhere to unload things from the bottom or middle, though the side zipper does help if you have a few things you need to access easily.
fits very nicely, and if you get used to Gregory's fitting directions, it's easy to get a great fit quickly without much adjusting.

Comments about Gregory Z55 Pack:
I used this pack backpacking through europe for 2 weeks and it worked great. It was large enough to hold 5 pair of pants, 7 shirts, boxers, socks, shoes, and even my toiletry bag. Yet through out my travels I never once had any problems with it being at all uncomfortable! The expandable front pouch was a great place to store larger items like my shoes and the weatherproof top lid pocket was perfect for storing Ipods, cameras, etc... This was a great pack and I can't wait to get out on some hikes this summer to use it again.

Comments about Gregory Z55 Pack:
I bought this pack after seeing EZ Hayes use it (his review is in here). I am a minimalist, so this pack works great for me. You will need a compression sack for your sleeping bag to get it to fit in the bottom. I can cram my bag, pad, jetboil, water filter, clothes and food all into this thing. The compartment between the outer pocket and the main compartment works great to cram wet clothes/boots in. I couldn't be happier with this pack. I'm 6-2 and the medium fits just right. The zipper pockets on the hip straps work great for a camera.

Comments about Gregory Z55 Pack:
This is a great pack if used and adjusted correctly. Often bad reviews are from folks that do not use their gear properly. You push past 35lbs. with this pack and it's not that comfortable. It can done for sure, just adjust and pack properly. If you are carrying heavy loads then you might want a different pack for such loads. I'm usually well below 30lbs. with food and water for 3 days and this pack feels great. I see huge packs on people for 2 day backpacking trips, lighten up and you'll have way more fun not to mention less pain:-) I'd actually like to see this pack be lighter and have a removable back sheet but again, if I want ultra lightweight I'd go with a Go Lie JAM pack, which I just ordered. I have had several Gregory packs over the last 15 years and I have loved them all. So glad some of their packs are finally getting lighter though but you will not find a better built longer lasting pack if taken care of. I have learned that a lot of folks don't take care of their gear and it often fails and they blame the gear or use it as not intended... lesson learned.
You all have fun.

Comments about Gregory Z55 Pack:
Used this pack on 6 different trips. It is my "3-4 day pack." Definitely one of the lightest packs out there for weekend trips.
Pros -
it is extremely light
I have had no problems with its durability yet.
I also like the hip belt pockets.
I'm only 5'6" and this pack fits me extremely well.
Cons -
It is a little challenging to get my sleeping bag in the bottom. this is due to the curved design (to reduce sweating by keeping the pack off of your back). I like the design, but it does make it a bit tougher to get things down in the bottom.
Hip belt - you've heard it before. It is not a beefy hip belt. I overloaded it on my last trip (I had over 50 pounds in it) and the hip belt struggled.
nylon zipper pulls - two of these have pulled off already.
Overall, I love this pack. I knew exactly what I was getting (I knew it couldn't do big loads, and I knew about the curved design). So this pack has been everything I expected it to be. IT has done great in the rain, and has plenty of capacity for a three or four night trip. I would certainly recommend...in fact I have - two of my friends have both bought this pack and have been pleased.

Comments about Gregory Z55 Pack:
This pack has been on my back for a good 200 miles in the CO backcountry, and it gets better each time. The Z55 is best for 2-3 night stays, and can surprisingly hold more than it looks like it can. The padding on the back is great, as well as the hip straps, but the shoulder straps could use a little more. Internally, it completely holds all the essentials, without making the load seem off balance or too heavy. I've routinely put 32lbs in it, and it only gets lighter from there. If you're looking for a great pack at a great price, the Z55 DELIVERS!!!

I read other reviews about this but had reservations. I crammed a light summer fleece bag, FL Waders, Fishing vest, 4 days of clothing, 3 days of food, fishing rain jacket, a 3L platypus bag, 2 fly rods, stove, etc... It handled a strenuous 4.5 mile/6500 ft elevation hike with 1200 vertical foot descent with ease. I liked it's balance and comfort over an external frame pack much better. I'd buy it again or maybe get the next size up for a 4-7 day trip. Otherwise, this 50+ gent liked it a lot.

Comments about Gregory Z55 Pack:
This pack worked great! The guy at REI in Fort Collins took a minute to show me just how much you could do with this pack. You can pack tons of stuff on the outside and on the inside. I had to buy some longer straps for the bottom but that was not a big deal. If I bring my dog I can pack his food, my food and gear for 3 days with no problem. I never tried leaving longer than that but Im sure if i wanted to I could have. Its great for airport travel as well, very roomy.

Comments about Gregory Z55 Pack:
This was, and is my first pack. I've been on two moderate to strenuous hikes of about five miles each with elevations of more than 1000 feet. Now, if this is your first pack also, I recommend watching the video on REI.com on how to adjust your pack. By the end of my first hike, my shoulders were screaming, but through no fault of the pack. Once I took the time to review how the pack should be properly worn, the second hike was a breeze and with no discomfort. By the way, it makes a great pillow as well! The only major regret I have is not buying the larger version in case I want to do a several day hike. The other slight con is the lack of easy to access pockets on the exterior, but this is kind of nitpicking. All in all, I'm anxious for some time off so I can hit the trail with my Gregory as soon as I can! Oh yeah, it does keep you cool.

Comments about Gregory Z55 Pack:
I tried this pack out last year with about 35 pounds on one extended trip. After a few hours it ripped into my shoulders, presumably because I could not get the belt to adjust properly to hold the load properly. Not only was it extremely uncomfortable, one of the loops to lash things onto the outside of the pack ripped. This pack was a huge disappointment.
