Comments about Kelty Shadehouse - Medium:
I was trying to decide between this and the REI Alcove and decided on this one because I felt it would handle the wind and water better than the Alcove. It has the same footprint (100 sq ft) plus it's 5 lbs lighter with a smaller pack size.
I am 6' tall and I can walk under it without having to bend over. Technically it is a two door shelter (front and back). The sides are two short to walk under but this also adds more shade under the shelter. Another reason I chose it over the Alcove.
The first time I set it up it was difficult. The second time I did it myself in 7 minutes. It may be difficult to set up with one person if you don't have good hand/arm strength. I would recommend practicing the set-up before taking it out for first time use.
Kelty Missed Something!! >>> I looked at the reviews on the REI website and there were two reviews for the large version of this shelter. Both reviewers were as puzzled as I was about the 4 starps included in the package. The instructions do not mention them as a parts or even how to use them. I called Kelty and the rep I talked to didn't know they were included. Here is what you do with the straps... The straps are 2 different lengths. The long starps go on the front and back of the shelter and the shorter straps go on the sides. Each strap has a buckle on one end and a groument on the other. At the bottom of each corner of the nylon cover is the receiving end of the buckle. Start with any corner(i.e., right front corner) and clip the buckle on the strap to the nylon cover. The groument end attaches to the other pole (i.e., left front corner). Continue to do this until all 4 coners are connected. Once you get the starps in place you can tighten the straps so that the corners move inward. This it will raise the height of the shelter and make it very sturdy. These straps also make the shelter more of a free standing unit. Actually after completely assembled you can move it without having to take it apart. Pretty cool!!
I would have given it 5 stars but it can be difficult to put together.
All in all it is a sturdy, lightweight shelter and worth a look. I am not sure I would have paid full price for it over the Alcove. On sale it seemed to be a good deal and I think it was worth the extra money!

This shelter worked great once it was set up. Kelty needs to work on the instruction pamphlet though. This requires 2 people and a lot of pulling to snap the poles into the grommets.
It includes 4 nylon straps that are not mentioned in the instructions. Strap them to the bottom of the poles (clip one side then fit the grommet on the other side into the pole)then tighten to pull the poles in place so that it stands. It is very adjustable using the straps - you can make it taller or wider depending on your needs.
It will fit over a picnic table but without much extra space.
It provided great shade at our beach camp site and withstood 20mph winds very easily once staked.

Comments about Kelty Shadehouse - Medium:
We needed a shelter for sun and rain on frequent car camping trips. The mimimal info given with the product made it unclear if this would fill the bill. It was tested on a recent 5 day camping trip where we experienced sun, rain and wind and I'm happy to say the shelter performed well in all.
Set up is difficult for one person. It works like many tents, but because of the size of the poles, it doesn't flex as easily and getting the fly attached to the frame can be quite a workout! But the structure maintains its shape well, even after exposure to rain and wind.
Instructions for set up are adequate, but there was no mention of the 4 long webbing straps included. These seem to work well to square up the structure at its base and keep the shelter stable.
Dimensions are somewhat misleading. Because of its dome shape, 9x11 at the base means it's overhead coverage is somewhat less. A six foot picnic table fits under it, but ends got alittle wet with rain. The large size would be better for more coverage.
Overall, very happy with this product. Now I don't mind it it rains when I'm camping!

I'm so impressed with this product. Perfect for car camping or setting up in the park. First time set-up was a bit difficult but once you understand that the design of this structure is all about stress ... it's a snap. (oops... bad pun). Excellent design and quality! Very sturdy in the wind.
Buy it...You won't be sorry. Top notch!
