Comments about Kelty Screenhouse - Medium:
We purchased the discontinued model from 2008 at [$]to use for a shelter over a picnic table when car camping in the Green Mountains of Vermont in July. Keep in mind this review is based on the 2008 model. The new version has a different pole system judging from the photos. We have this tent in the medium size and it's perfect to just throw over a picnic table and plenty of room for 4 people. I think 6 would be pushing it in this size. This tent combined with citronella candles did a fine job of keeping most of the bugs out since it doesn't have a floor. It did manage to keep the rain out multiple times but you must make sure to have the screen flaps down. I don't know if it's completely waterproof or water resistant but you can always treat it with Nikwax to waterproof it.My main complaint is with the pole system. The shock cords are too lax and the poles come apart way too easily. One person can set it up but it may take a while. Two people, much better. Don't assemble the poles first and then push them through as the directions suggest. Assemble them as you go always pushing the pole through with the other person guiding the pole but not pulling. When breaking down, don't even think of pulling on the poles. They will come apart and it will take forever to remove the poles from the tent. I always set a new tent up a few times before I have to use it and the first time I set it up by myself it took longer to break it down than it did to set up because of the pole situation. I hope this problem has been resolved with the newer model. The screen flaps could also be improved. The ones that are located on the doors tend to come apart if it's windy because the velcro strips used to secure the section by the zippers are not generous enough and don't have a shock cord and hook on that side. These are the only things that prevent me from giving this 5 stars. The tent seems to be quite sturdy when staked down but it hasn't gone through the acid test in Colorado yet. It was a great deterrent for bugs in the woods of Vermont. Drys out quickly in the sun. All in all, a worthy purchase for summer evenings car camping or even your back yard.
