Comments about Mountain Hardwear Splitter Pack:
I purchased this pack about a month ago with the intent of getting something designed for daily trips to the crag. When I inspected it in the store, it seemed like a good size and had key features that a crag specific pack should have (in my opinion). I really like that the pack is well built from the outside on in and it seems like it will hold up to the rigors of heavy use in harsh environments. The pack splits open in half and lays flat, making it easy to load your gear and get to once opened.
Things I like about it: I like this pack because unlike the other packs, this one does not have you just dumping all of your gear into one main chamber and then digging to find it when you get to your destination. I am OCD when it comes to packing up my gear and love the individual pockets inside and gear loops for your rack. The pack is large enough to hold my rope (10.3mm x 60M), shoes, harness, 16 draws, chalk bag, gloves, large first aid kit, helmet, webbing slings, 12 locking beaners and ATC's, 2 way radio, 4 guide books and the hydration bladder. Thats enough for a full day at the crag without having to leave anything behind. The pack is comfortable on the approach and balances the weight distribution well between my hips and shoulders. I also like that i will remove the hip belt and frame sheet and plan on using it for a carry on bag when flying since it is the same size as the max size allowed.
Things that I don't like about it: It needs a small pocket on the hip belt for my cell phone and keys that would be easily accessible after I get out of the car and throw it on my back. The front pocket is not baffled so if you have the pack fully loaded like I do then the only things you will be able to carry in there are soft books and very thin items. Lastly is the very poorly designed hydration pouch that they forgot to make an exit port of the drinking tube. It woks fine to leave the zipper not fully closed and just have the hose run out of the top but for such a well thought out and designed pack, I cant believe that they forgot to put this simple slit in the bag...
Overall it has so far proven to be the bag that I was hoping for and I would recommend it to any climber that is looking for a great day crag bag.
