The Reversible Mercurial jacket from The North Face uses a revolutionary new construction technique combined with lightweight synthetic insulation to achieve temperature-regulating capability!

  • New baffle construction and the use of light-absorbing and light-reflecting fabrics gives the Reversible Mercurial jacket the ability to adapt to changes in weather
  • When the temperature is low, wearing the black side out provides the warmth and protection of a high-performance, synthetic-insulated jacket
  • Small pockets created by the internally exposed baffles catch and retain warm air; limited stitch lines keep wind penetration to a minimum, and black fabric absorbs heat
  • Towards midday, when the temperature climbs or during increased aerobic activity, the jacket can be reversed for a cooling effect
  • First, the silver fabric is coated with aluminum and reflects 39 - 47% more of the sun's rays than the black side
  • Second, the baffle system permits the baffles to flex open, allowing air to circulate between the panel's gaps; cool air flows close to the body to channel away excess heat
  • The sum of these 2 technologies creates a jacket that keeps the athlete 32% cooler when worn silver side out
  • Black shell is made from lightweight Pertex® ripstop nylon fabric and silver side is made from Schoeller® ripstop nylon fabric
  • Both sides are treated with a Durable Water Repellent finish
  • PrimaLoft® One is a patented ultra-fine microfiber blend that offers downlike softness and is incredibly lightweight and water repellent
  • Drawcord hem and elastic-bound cuffs seal in warmth
  • Hand pockets and Napoleon chest pocket on black side; 2 on-seam hand pockets on silver side

    I purchased this jacket as a layering piece. Can be worn as a stand alone or in a layer. As an adventure photographer and avid skier I will experience very cold mornings and afternoon sun. I can start out with the heat reflective fabric towards my body in the morning and reverse it to reflect the sun in the afternoon.

    I have worn the jacket for walks with my dog (no skiing yet) and it regulated my body temperature. I wore it to the grocery store yesterday when it was 26° out and had to unzip in the store.

    I have great hopes for this jacket. It should be great for backpacking and hiking too. Stows into a stuff sack in the left pocket.
