Comments about REI Duck's Back Rain Cover - 80 Liters:
I took this trekking/backpacking in the Himalayas and it ripped within 3 days. Granted my backpack was mounted on a mule on and off, the fragility of this thing was shocking. It tore in 3-4 places and looked like a rag. My sister brought the same one, and same story. Thank goodness we brought duck tape, though it didn't prevent more rips from happening.
We noticed that almost no one else's covers were ripping like this -and most of the major brands were represented in our group. I ended up buying a cheap $5 cover from a local, and it didn't rip once for the remainder of the trek (30 days). The cheap one didn't have a good draw string like REI's, but it stayed in one piece.
To this product's credit, had we been in less rough terrain, it might have held up nicely (great drawstring, drain hole at the bottom, and easy to pack up). But if you're trekking through branches or using mules, heads up.
