Comments about Eton FR150 Microlink Radio:
This radio is a "must have" for everyone in the United States, especially if you live in areas subject to disasters like California earthquakes and flooding regions. Here is a real life example of why: Last summer, I was working in an 80+ story high-rise in downtown LA when an earthquake struck and swayed the building and almost threw us to the floor. We bolted for the emergency exits and walked 26 flights down to the street not knowing exactly what was going on. No one knew the magnitude of the quake or even if it was a quake when we got to the street. I was the only one with an AM radio and tuned into the news station and got the full report immediately and we took appropriate actions based on that. In a larger emergency--there is no AC power, no lights, and confusion. Only a couple of AM stations in every city are required by the FCC to have secure backup power and emergency broadcast systems to be able to inform people what is going on. An MP3 player, a computer, a cell phone and anything that requires AC will not work and will not help you in a disaster. You need to have this radio. Even with the deficiencies that I listed--and it was just my “wish list,” you need to have a flashlight and an AM radio receiver. This radio has one of the best speakers you will find on this size of device and a very sensitive receiver for AM and FM to pull in your stations. "Little radio, big sound." But the absolute most impressive thing about this radio is the weather band receiver--it works! Many radios with weatherband cannot pull in the signal--this little thing does.
The radio sounds so good, even in mono that I leave it on all day and it stays powered by my florescent desk light. I travel with it, take it to the beach, and I always have a radio in my hotel room to sleep by or a flashlight to find the light switch or weather band to check the weather for the next day. You can leave this radio on to fall asleep by and not worry that you have to buy new batteries in the morning for it to work. Just crank it up, or leave it in the light and the solar panel will recharge.
The 3 LED flashlight is bright and can also serve to signal help from the sky if you happen to get stranded somewhere away from civilization at night. The antenna extends in 5 sections to approximately 10 inches and is sturdy. But if nothing else—one of the final reasons to get this inexpensive radio is that it looks so cool in my home or office. Everyone that sees it, (mine is green) asks me: what is that?

Comments about Eton FR150 Microlink Radio:
I saw this in the store and realized I had been wanting something exactly like it for a while. My wife got it for me for Christmas. Since then I've listened to it everyday (several times a day) for weather updates. I like the outdoors so this thing is immensely handy for checking the weather for running or my bicycle commute to school. It seems to last a while on some cranking/sitting in light.
The reason for the four stars: This is my third try at a properly functioning unit. The first one sounded like battling cheese graters as I cranked it. Evidently it worked, but I decided to check it in for one that sounded like it was supposed to when cranked. The exchanged unit worked great except the NOAA weather channels. For some reason they only came in REALLY faintly. When turned up all the way they were audible, but barely. I tested the third one I got and everything works perfectly. So, I'm a little wary about how long this will last.
For the money, I'm really glad I got this. It will accompany me on any trips, camping or otherwise. A must have for "just in case" too.

Comments about Eton FR150 Microlink Radio:
A great radio but if you want to charge your cell phone be sure that the correct connector is available. For instance, they do not have a connector for the iPhone. The new FR160 has a standard USB output for charging so if you have an iPhone or other phone that charges using a standard USB connector, consider that. The FR160 is brand new and I am sure REI will eventually. sell it. Otherwise the FR160 does pretty much everything the FR150 does. If the FR150 has a connector for your cell phone it is an excellent radio.

Comments about Eton FR150 Microlink Radio:
After my son was w/o electricity for 4 days because of an ice storm, I decided to get an emergency radio for every member of my family. After researching, this seemed to be the best radio for the money, so I ordered 4 and I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality in such a small package. Reception is clear, tuning easy and I've just left mine in the window for a solar charge, so it's always ready to go. Haven't received my cell phone charger tip yet to see how that's going to work. The light is brighter than I was expecting from the reviews I read. All in all, for the size and money, I think it's a good buy and handy to have around. Think I may buy a couple more to keep at work.
