Comments about Princeton Tec Apex Extreme LED Headlamp:
As an avid cacher with a family, I find that most of my caching is done at night. I bought this headlamp only after searching and using several others. This is the absolute best I have found for battery life, brightness and durability.
I received this light for Christmas from my wife (she let me pick it out!) I researched all of the available lights in my price range and found this one to be the best for under $100. I did not allow myself to even look at some of the much higher priced spelunking lamps.
I was so excited as I opened the box, it arrived on Christmas Eve. I took it out of the box and immediately started playing with it. To my surprise, it did come with batteries! I know this because I blinded myself within seconds of having it out of the package. Oh my. This thing is extremely bright. I could not wait to use it.
I got on the trail the next night. It throws down a serious beam of light. It has two different swithes. There is the single light switch that is for distance. This has two modes-Bright and Mega Bright! Then there is the switch for the 4 light option that is still extremely bright but does have a dimmer and a flash option.
One of the problems with LED lights, is that the brighter they are, the more they heat up. When they heat up, they must internally dim themselves to protect the circuit. One reason that this lamp is so bright is the large heat sink attached to the head. This allows the light to be extremely bright without damaging the LED. I have not seen any other headlamp with a heat sink this large. most of the time, you cannot see any heat sink even though it will have one.
The light has a regulated circuit that allows it to stay the same initial brightness for over 2.5 hours on the brightest setting. I got far longer than that because I used the dimmer option which was plenty bright for my uses. It is hard to say about the battery life with rechargeables. I recharge them after every use which gives me more than enough light every night I go out. Sure it does take 8 batteries. Using rechargeables is a must for me.
I was concerned initially about the battery pack. All of my previous lights had a integrated battery pack in the head strap. I really like the separate battery pack now. It is lighter on my head and there are numerous options for placing the battery pack. I usually just put it in my coat pocket or clip it onto my pack.
Princeton Tec is a company that stands behind their products with a lifetime guarantee. No other headlight manufacturer does this to my knowledge. My first experience with them was with my dive light that I have used for over 20 years without fail.
Overall, I love my lamp. It offers an extremely bright light with a tight beam with good penetrating distance. It has an extremely long battery life that warns you when it is getting low.
