Comments about The North Face Plasma Gore-Tex XCR Boa II Light Hiking Boots - Men's:
I wear these almost every day in some way. They are one of the most comfortable pairs of hiking boots that I have ever owned and are really light weight. They are very flexible and durable but the lacing system failed me after less than two months. The left shoe is impossible to tighten to the desired tension. I am disappointed with the lacing system.

Comments about The North Face Plasma Gore-Tex XCR Boa II Light Hiking Boots - Men's:
Best boots I have very owned. Super easy to get on and off. Hiked for miles in heavy downpours in the White Mountains and the shoes remained completely waterproof and also breathable. I use them in every type of weather from blizzards to hot summer days. Unfortunately I out-grew my pair but I loved then so much I decided to buy another.

Comments about The North Face Plasma Gore-Tex XCR Boa II Light Hiking Boots - Men's:
I am 6'8" AND 275#, carry 35# in mostly mountain trails. The Boa system is great because you can easily adjust the fit after you have begun hiking. Adjusting to a perfect snugness cuts down on slippage inside the boot as well as creating a firm contact with the trail. The only problem I encountered was the cable broke while I was in the upper Merced River area. It was easy to tie the loose ends together. The light weight, aggressive tread pattern and adjustment feature are truly prized. The inside heel corner occasionally catches my pant cuff on the opposite leg so I am thinking about trimming this a little. Great boots.

Comments about The North Face Plasma Gore-Tex XCR Boa II Light Hiking Boots - Men's:
I love the feel of the boots, and I love the ease of off and on. I am not too happy with reliability at this point. Also not the greatest ankle support in a lightweight boot.
So, I have not decided yet if I am keeping them or not. I have about 90 miles on them at this point. I've seen a few things I do not like. Ankle support is not great. Reliability of the lacing system is iffy. I've had them pop open on me when going under or around blow downs on trails.
North Face had two weeks to send me a spare set of laces before a six day backpack trip, but they never arrived as promised. Sure enough, one of the boots failed me two days into that six day backpacking trek. I stopped at lunch and released the boots. We had been hiking in a dry and dusty area in eastern Washington State. Dust (not a fine powdered dust, but not as rough grained as sand either) poured out of the two knobs as I released them. One of the boots refused to lock when I put them back on. I was able to hold the knob in and turn it to tighten the cable though, and then I had to put duct tape over the knob to hold it tight until we reached our destination that night. That night, I took the mechanism apart and reassembled it. After about 45 minutes of messing with it, I was able to get it to work again—but that boot would not tighten quite as much as the other boot for the remainder of the week (and still won't).
I may be willing to carry an extra set of gears, knobs, and cables, but it all depends on their weight and (of course) of having them at hand so that I have that option. Am still waiting for North Face to send them. Boa will not send them and claims to only have a one percent failure rate--probably true across their entire line, including skiing boots.
Anyway, I'll give North Face another couple of weeks to get the cables to me and then I'll take these out for another couple of outings before deciding if I should keep them or not.
The fit (though you need to buy up about 1/2 to 1 size), the comfort, and the ease of off and on are amazing. That comfort adjusts as you go across different terrain, uphill, downhill, etc. That's something really special about this lacing system--it self adjusts and stays supportive and comfortable. The ankle support, the squeaking while you walk, and the lacing system reliability are not so great.

Comments about The North Face Plasma Gore-Tex XCR Boa II Light Hiking Boots - Men's:
Bought these boots in spite of the lacing system. Shoelace technology is well proven, but I trusted The North Face to not sell junk. Wore the boots to work for a few days and they appeared to be great. However, two hours into their first hike (backpacking up a wash in southern Utah), when I needed to remove the boots in order to put on shorts, I could not get them off. Not just one, BOTH of them. I suspect that sand got into the lacing mechanism. What good are boots that are not able to be worn in sand? I know that, if I got these off, there was no way I could ever get them back on. I had to say farewell to my friends and hike back to my truck while they continued without me. If it were not for the lame lacing system I could recommend these boots, but considering my experience, I say avoid these and get boots with traditional laces.

Comments about The North Face Plasma Gore-Tex XCR Boa II Light Hiking Boots - Men's:
Having tried various brands of hiking boots such as Asolo, Nike, Merril, LL bean, etc. I've found that North face is the only brand of boot Ive used that does not give me an excruciating and sometimes months long case of planar fasciitis following backpacking trips. I've now owned two pairs of these boots, one of each version I and II. Both were light, waterproof, good traction, and comfortable for hours on the trail. Both also had the lacing systen fail, fortunately each time at the conclusion of a three day hike rather than mid way. The tensioning system irreperably jammed apparently due to a minor & unavoidable egress of dust. Loved the concept of the boa system but it simply seems too risky and undependable for field use. I'm now wearing North face hedge hog trail shoes most days and the mid version for hikes and they work perfectly.

Comments about The North Face Plasma Gore-Tex XCR Boa II Light Hiking Boots - Men's:
Because of the need for a good hiking shoe for my job I looked into the Boa Plasma as an option. Once I was able to spend some time in the shoe I was more than please by the convenience of the lacing system and the fit it provided during my long hikes. Not having to retie my shoes several times was a great advantage with a pack on my back. I had a lace break after a pretty extensive time of use and was able to get new lace through their Dialed for Life Warranty. It is nice to be able to access warranty parts direct from Boa on their website [@]under Dialed in for Life logo. They are quick to respond and in three days I had new lace. No hassles and easy to fix.I would recommend the product mostly because of the lacing system and the great service I received.

Comments about The North Face Plasma Gore-Tex XCR Boa II Light Hiking Boots - Men's:
Every night I hike for over an hour up one of the steepest mountains in California on the Big Sur coast and then I hike back down the next day. The terrain is packed dirt, rock, and loose dirt and dust. These boots worked great on this terrain except when I walked through a patch of loose dirt and dust. Some of it contacted the lacing mechanism on the back of the boot and got inside it. The lacing system immediately broke. It became impossible to loosen or tighten the boot. This occurred after only owning the boots a couple months. It was not possible to shake or wash the dust and dirt out and restore functionality. It was not possible to open the mechanism to clean it out because it has an odd-shaped micro-screw as a closure device. So basically this boot is completely unusable after only 2 months. It is frustrating, painful and difficult to try to get a boot on and off that is tight and can't be loosened.
You might think this is just a fluke, but I also bought the earlier model of this boot, the Boa 1, a year or so in the past and had exactly the same experience. I just bought the Boa 2 on the mistaken assumption North Face had realized the problem with this model and fixed it. This purchase is a complete loss. Fortunately REI accepted the return of the Boa 1. Now I also need to return the Boa 2.

Comments about The North Face Plasma Gore-Tex XCR Boa II Light Hiking Boots - Men's:
Okay, so I haven't hiked in it yet...but, after having 5 different boots shipped to me, this is by far the best fit (I wear a 13, ordered a 14 - perfecto!). Also, there are comments about the boa lacing getting tangled or breaking; both of which are problematic. I called North Face and they are sending me a lace repair kit that comes with laces, dials, instructions - at no charge - so if I snap it on the trail, I can fix it. They also said I could send it in and they'd fix it. [...]
