Machine built wheels these days tend to be OK, but after reading the reviews on this one I thought I would check it before using it. Sure enough it was very poorly built.

Credit to REI, I took it straight to the nearest store and they fixed it and after a few rides it still seems OK. However, I got it online to save time and instead I had to take it in and wait a couple of hours to get it fixed.

Given the history this wheel has in reviews, I'm not sure why this has not been addressed by REI.

Wheel worked great for the first 1000 miles, but has recently started throwing a spoke every 20 miles or so. Very frustrating.

I bought this wheel for a Trek 7300(hybrid), to replace a worn out wheel. Thought, with a Deore MTB hub, it should be plenty tough and able to handle some communting and pulling 2 children (combined weight - 75lbs) in a kid trailer. The first ride, out I did about 25miles+, no problems there. Then I attach a trailer, and pull my children for about 5-6miles, now the wheel is so badly out of true, I did not abuse them or hit anything, stayed on perfectly flat asphalt rodes.Looking back, these wheels were properly not tensioned or assembled correctly[...] But to others looking at these wheels, save your money on something better, or use the money you save, and buy a truing stand and learn how repair these wheels.

I agree with Erth's assessment of this wheel. Bought wheel trued and tensioned, within the first 6 miles a spoke broke. Took it back to REI, they replaced the spke and checked tension and true. this happened 3 consecutive days until the guys at the shop had enough of me and rebuilt the wheel with better spokes. Only one issue since was a spoke that came loose.

I knew when I ordered these it would be a chance as pre-made wheels are always a risk. These are not put together well. The wheel was out of true, out of round, and the tension was light. I would not recommend to anyone as it would need frequent truing, and the risk of spoke breakage would be high.

The Sun CR-18 is a quality rim, and this wheel's shabby construction undermines it's robustness.

One could argue for the price you get what you pay for, but if the wheel requires that much work to be proper, why bother selling it?

I expect more from REI.
