Comments about REI Urban Traveler Pack:
As a college student, I got this backpack to replace a worn-out laptop backpack. Fortunately for me, I do not carry my laptop around except for the occasional class presentation, so lack of a laptop compartment was fine (if you do carry laptops around, look into REI's Quantum Computer Pack). I did, however, find it difficult to carry books and papers around in, because when the large flap is unzipped it will just let everything spill out. (One adaption is to clip the top of the internal pockets to the bottom clips, creating a pocket for books and folders, although binders may not fit.)
However, as a traveler and an athlete, this pack has come in handy for storing clothes and other bulky items. The compression panels keep the volume down, and expansion zipper is extremely handy for when I just brought too much stuff along.
Also have received a few compliments about the bag!
Service and delivery comments:

Comments about REI Urban Traveler Pack:
I have used this pack twice for long weekend trips, and it has proven well worth the purchase. I can get 4-5 shirts, a couple pairs of pants/shorts (summerweight), and an Eagle Creek halfcube for undies and socks, with room to spare. While I typically travel without a toiletry kit, the wedge-shaped expansion provides more than enough room for one, or more clothes.
An internal panel buckles down to compress clothes, and minimize wrinkles (I fold my clothes around the panel from an Eagle Creek 18" packing folder, stack them, and fit the stack in the bag). Watch not to cinch it too tight, or the padded back will bow somewhat.
The front compartment is pretty well organized, though I wish it had a little more depth to it, to allow for items too big for any of the internal pockets (i.e. trade-size paperbacks), and I suppose the key fob could be more useful if it were longer (like the Timbuk2 bags).
The front pocket is a little too tight, but this may related to me cramming the compartment behind it to the brim.
As an added bonus, it's made primarily from recycled polyester. So if you care about supporting such efforts, it's a small way to reduce your consumption (well, they're all small, but they add up). Plus, if you really just don't like it, REI's 100% satisfaction guarantee would allow you to return it.
Happy Travels!
