These new green chairs are an inferior shadow of the original blue chairs. We have two blue chairs and want two more because everyone we camp with wants to sit in our chairs instead of their crummy collapsable saggy chairs that are so popular now. Those chairs end up in the trash. Our blue chairs are sturdy and super comfortable because they support your back and keep it straight instead of all hunched over like most camp chairs. We were reticent to try the new green version after seeing the bad reviews here. The green one we ordered was heavy, small, and the fabric is way too stretchy, so it doesn't keep your back off the cross-brace. The seat is supposed to fit in flush with the seat back when it is closed, but it doesn't. It sticks out at an angle. Apparently no one is checking the quality control at Byer. I don't know why REI is even carrying these poor copycats. We picked ours up at the store, took it out of the box, sat in it and immediately returned it. A big disappointment.

So, we ordered a set of two recently after searching for a long time for a compact chair of a similar design. Design-wise, these chairs are pretty cool: they lay flat in the trunk, the angle is optimum for a relaxed posture, and they look cool too. When they arrived one was perfect but the other's canvas back was loose, causing one's back to rest on the top bar of the chair-back and also contributing to a slouchy posture. We sent it back, twice, and received two new chairs with the same problem. We are either going to send it back a third time or attempt to fix it ourselves.

The perfect one is still perfect though, so I'd say order this chair and hopefully you'll have similarly good luck (or maybe better luck). I understand they recently moved production overseas and the quality control is not where it was when these were made in the US. Yay outsourcing!

I bought two of these to go with a table in a bag that I bought from another company a year ago. That company changed the color of their table/chair set, so I came here looking for a chair to match my table and found it! Plus the REI version of the chair is cheaper by $20 AND its made from solid wood, not FSC-certified mixed hardwood.
Only real difference is this chair's seat isn't quite as deep, but I prefer this chair's seat.
This chair simply feels like a better quality product, not heavy, but solid in construction.

This chair is comfortable and easy to set up, compact, and best for flat surfaces. Without looking at it too closely, the chair looks nice. It is, surprisingly, made in Vietnam. The wood and screws will probably come apart in not too long a time as they are already loose. If you can get it pretty cheap, it may not be a bad deal. We bought them for [$] each and are returning them for something more solid.

This is a perfect chair for sitting around the campsite. Its simple design functions very well and provides a lightweight and good looking place to sit.

I felt the craftsmanship was good with its brass hardware and solid wood.

These are such a great design and incredibly comfortable. They are so simple and so functional. This, I say of the decades-old Byer's chairs my river guide friends have had forever and I have used and borrowed a million times. So, I was pleased to see them here at REI for a good price. I ordered 4. When the box arrived and it says where they now come from, I understand why the price is good. One of the seat slats detached as soon as I removed it from the box.[...] Closer inspection revealed that there was a lot of mismatched hardware used to assemble these. Some slats were glued, some not... Some screwed and nailed, some not... Some nail heads up above the wood surface ready to scratch bare thighs... At best I would regard these as used chairs that you will have to use your own hardware and tools to maintain. If I could find some old-school, made-in-Maine Byer's chairs at a yard sale, I'd gladly pay $40/ea. for them. These? $15. Back to the store they went.

I had one of these in college and should never have given it away; I plan to buy a replacement soon. The low position was good for doing homework since I could spread things out on the floor. The lack of armrests made it handy for playing guitar. I easily stowed in a closet or behind the couch. It was also easy to carry to the park to read a book or watch an outdoor movie. The wooden seat is more comfortable than it might look. Simple, sturdy, and inexpensive.
