Comments about REI Picnic Backpack - 4 Person:
Purchased this item at my local REI (Northridge, CA). The item description online doesn't do this justice... the quality of the pack and most accessories meets REI standards (considering the price); the only exception: 2 of the 4 plastic wine glasses had snapped off their bases by the time I got it home. Among the picnic accessories included in this pack, the wine glasses were the ones that I would single out as being the of the lowest quality... even without breaking. So, not being a big fan of stems on picnic glasses anyway (they may be chic but they're certainly not very practical: exactly how do you plant them firmly on grass, or a rough picnic table for that matter?), I decided to replace them with 4 small plastic tumblers, so no big deal.
The insulated compartment is large enough to hold food and blue ice packs for a picnic for 4 (I use mine for Hollywood Bowl concerts, so we're talking salads, entrees, desserts), although the relatively narrow opening (4.5" front to back x 11" wide and 14" deep) means you'll want to opt for tall/narrow food containers rather than wide/shallow ones. The fact that the lining for the food compartment is "waterproof" and can be removed for cleaning... just sponge wipe it, or a rinse under a faucet is all it needs) is another great feature. As is the built in bottle opener on the outside pocket's cinch strap.
I compared this pack to the insulated cooler backpack that REI also offers (without accessories), and liked this one the best... it's all-in-one: plates, cutlery, wine opener, plastic cutting board, etc. Swap out the wine glasses, add some cloth napkins and a blanket or tablecloth and you're good to go.
Tip: The plastic cutting board is just about the right size to fit crosswise in the food compartment, so if you need to organize your food, you've already got a separator!
Pack features (shoulder straps, sternum strap and hip belt) are all sufficient... not what you'd want on a grueling day hike, perhaps, but definitely adequate to get a picnic into an outdoor concert, to the beach or a few-mile hike-in. The material is perhaps a little less durable than what you'll find on a typical pack, so time will tell if that's going to be an issue. Although, really, how often do you go on picnics? (I'll probably go on more, now that I have this pack...)
