Comments about Garmont Eclipse 3 XCR Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I did a lot of research before I selected this shoe, and I have to say that I am very pleased with it. It's comfortable, well designed , well made, and aesthetically attractive on the trail or with jeans. I just finished hiking in them nearly all day everyday for a week over varied terrain - right out of the box. No blisters or soreness anywhere. This shoe is quite sturdy so far, and the luggy soles helped on the rocks. If it had just a bit more mid-sole cushioning I would've given it five stars. Also, the laces are quite a bit too long.

Comments about Garmont Eclipse 3 XCR Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
The Garmont shoe felt great in the store but during my first walk / hike it was clear the furthest most medial islet approximated my first metatarsal head. I quickly developed blisters on both feet. Since then I've given the Garmont six weeks to see if I just needed to break them in. The islet still irritates my first met head and I quickly adjust my gait just to avoid the pain. Certainly, we all have different feet. These shoes are not for me and I would encourage a first time Garmont buyer to critically evaluate the shoe prior to purchase.

Comments about Garmont Eclipse 3 XCR Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I have ankle spurs on both feet and cannot find a high or mid hiker that doesn't cause discomfort on my ankles, which forces me into a cross-trainer type shoe for hiking. After reading the first two reviews and trying them in the store, I thought after years of hiking in pain, I finally found the perfect hybrid hiker. After a minimal break-in, I hiked San Gorgonio (decent grade and rocky) with a 50lb pack to mid base camp and then a daypack to summit. They were very supportive and comfortable overall, but my left heel kept lifting and demolished the back of my foot, even after tightening the lace several times during the hike. I agree, laces too long and a bit slick. The right foot was perfect. Hestitant to keep them after that experience, but overall they were very comfortable...I am really bummed. Would have rated 5 stars, but the heel blisters negated any positives. Thank God for moleskin.

Used these on a couple of local trails. Good grip, great comfort, and no blisters! Garmont did it again! Highly would recommend anyone who likes to hit the trail to purchase these shoes! [...]

I've owned three pairs of these over several years. With my wide foot, it was very difficult to find shoes that fit comfortably. Most shoes that "say" they are wide, are really only slightly wider than the standard shoe. These are truly wide, at least if you order the wide version! The only reason it's not a 5 star from me is because of the sole. I would expect a Vibram to last a bit longer. Since the leather on the shoe is still fine and everything else is in pretty good shape, it's surprising that the sole was the first to start breaking down was the sole. Not a real bad problem, but still strange.
PS The shoe laces are REALLY long!

Hiking, backpacking, adventure travel.
I have had 3 pair of these now and love them! Good sturdy stiff tread. They seem to lose water resistance fast, but luckily I live in a very dry climate.

Felt good in the store but once I got on the trail different experience alltogether. In the alpine environment, I found the heel cups to be stiff, unpadded, and unforgiving giving me blisters and I also found the arch to be extremely high compared to other boots. Having a regular arch and not being flat-footed I thought this would resolve with break-in but never did. I continued to feel the high arch from the molded last. In the dozen or so shoes I've bought for hiking, this is the first arch issue I've experienced. Thought these features would work out with some trail miles and vertical feet, but did not. Was glad to return them to REI to be placed in a back room where they belong.

Comments about Garmont Eclipse 3 XCR Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I have worn these shoes almost daily for 6 months and they have proven durable. Very comfortable, not sure what other reviewers are concerned about - but the shoes should feel good when you first try them on or you are bound to be unhappy. Theses shoes have excellent traction on dry and wet trails - work very well for mountain biking when there is varied terrain requiring frequent dismounts. It takes a bit longer to tie, as the laces are somewhat long and need to be double knotted. In sole has remained soft. I would definitely recommend.

Comments about Garmont Eclipse 3 XCR Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
A friend of mine bought this pair of light hikers, and despite horrible heel blisters on his first day out he recommended them to me. I picked up a pair and low-and-behold, I developed horrible heel blisters on both feet. This is common enough with new shoes that I stuck with them, after all they're supportive and bomb-proof.
The main problem is the construction of the interior of the shoe. The shoe comes together and is joined at the heel, providing an abrasive rim that directly contacts the calcaneus (heel) bone. Most other shoes of its kind provide a smooth interior to prevent abrasion.
I like the other qualities of the shoe, so I tried everything to prevent blisters: band-aids, medical tape, duct tape on my heel, duct tape on the interior of the shoe, backpacker socks (in the dead of summer), inserts, etc. The final straw was a 10 mile trek in Yosemite Valley that left my heels screaming for relief. They're going back to REI, just as my friend's pair did.

My friend and I each bought a pair of the shoes. We could not be happier with the shoe. Great support and extremely comfortable.
