REI Members get back an estimated 10% on this item as part of their annual member refund.

    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

    • NOW PLAYING

In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley.

    • Author: Jon Krakauer
    • Softcover; 207 pages
    • Random House, Inc.; copyright 1996

His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $24,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet and invented a new life for himself. Four months later, his decomposed body was found by a party of moose hunters. Jon Krakauer was haunted by the particulars of the boy's starvation and by vague, unsettling parallels between events in Chris's and his own life. He spent more than a year retracing the convoluted path that led to Chris's death in the Alaska taiga, chasing down details of his peregrinations with an interest that bordered on obsession. In trying to understand McCandless, Krakauer came to reflect on other, larger subjects as well: the grip wilderness has on the American imagination, the allure high-risk activities hold for young men of a certain mind, the complicated, highly charged bond that exits between fathers and sons. The result of this meandering inquiry is Into the Wild .

        Comments about Into the Wild:

Ok, I know they want me to tell you it's a durable book (it is, as much as any other book is,) but I want to tell you that this story is, slightly frustrating. While I admire anyone who is willing to step off the grid, head out and do their own thing, there is a point at which stupidity has to be accounted for. The writing is terrific and K's journalist background serves him well. He get's all sides of the story, but the bottom line is, read it, enjoy it, don't try to repeat this at home. Putting yourself in risky survival situations, just for the sake of doing it is like playing Russian Ruelet (sp.?) only this time, Mother Nature has two bullets in the chamber...

            Comments about Into the Wild:

The book was terrifically written, Jon Krakauer did some serious work on this work. Now say what you will about Chris and his "Odyssey" but that is not what this book is about. The book is meant to be an inspiration for young people that are trying to identify themselves in this world. It is meant to show them that the daily grind isn't the only option for life out there. Was Chris McCandless living at the extreme end of this idea? Of course he was but regardless he was living and that is all Krakauer wants his readers to get out of this book, that living is what you make it, not what you are told to do.

            Comments about Into the Wild:

Jon Krakauer is a fantastic writer, I enjoy his style and have read most of his books. While this book fits the mold with good writing, I found it made me angry the entire time I was reading it. Christopher McCandless was foolish. Foolish and unprepared for every adventure he put himself into. I felt the book glorified his adventuresome spirit. Instead, the theme should have focused on what happens when you are completely unprepared.

This book is coming back up due to the new movie directed & written by Sean Penn. The movie is great but do the story justice and read the book.

Krakauer writes well and he takes care to do this well. Its not long but it leaves an imprint.

This book was given to me by a friend as a graduation present and it was all I could do to not follow in this guys footsteps. It sounded so cool and fun. In the end I went to college instead but don't let that stop you from reading this book.

AMAZING STORY! Chris McCandless serves as a personal inspiration, having broken free of the conventional and complacent lifestyle many end up living in our society. Although tragedy befalls him he died in the pursuit of adventure and in my mind is a true hero. The book is very intellectual and causes the reader to question and contemplate Chris's life choices and even your own.
