Comments about The North Face Dark Star -40 Sleeping Bag - Long:
This bag is rated for -40, it's a North Face product, and it's LONG ... compare to other bags rated for -40 and decide for yourself. The price of this product and the reputation of North Face won me over. If I am cold in this sleeping bag I am more than likely dead.

Comments about The North Face Dark Star -40 Sleeping Bag - Long:
This is my winter bag. I have used it in weather colder than -20 comfotably. it is extremely warm, roomy, and well-made. No cold spots, a good draft tube along the zipper and the neckline, and an excellent adjustable hood. Synthetic insulation means it will keep you warm even with a lot of moisture that could collapse a down bag.
on the downside, it is significantly heavier and takes up much more space than a down bag with similar insulating properties. Even with a compression stuff sack, this is a serious space-eater. because it is synthetic, don't store it compressed, or it will lose insulating properties.
if you want the warmest synthetic bag available and don't mind the weight and space issues, it's a fabulous choice.

Comments about The North Face Dark Star -40 Sleeping Bag - Long:
This is an excellent winter bag- and certainly warm in very cold conditions. I recently used it in the iditarod invitational-snow bike race - winter/Alaska sleeping outside with only the addition of a bivvy bag at temps down to -45. Very roomy and comfortable - the bulk also adds a 'psychological' measure of warmth/ comfort and cushioning. Carried on a bike the bulk/ weight were not a major issue.
