Comments about REI Quantum Computer Messenger Bag:
I bought this as an "upgrade" from my REI Transit bag that I have used for awhile. I needed more room and at first glance, this bag looked like it had what I needed. The flap is secured by two buckles which is a bit cumbersome to use and you must cinch it tight or else it feels lopsided when you carry the bag. The carrying strap is just about worthless even with the straps cinched tight. The bag wants to tilt and the buckles don't seem to be in the right place to keep the bag tight. The strap is sewn into the bag and the pad on the strap is also sewn down so adjusting for comfort is difficult on the fly. Carrying the bag across-the-shoulder is not recommended because of the placement of the pad on the strap so over one shoulder is the only way to go. I carried this bag 3/4 full all around campus yesterday and was cursing it by the end of the day. The organizer feels incomplete and needs an extra pocket or two. The laptop access from the back is pretty neat and the padding for the laptop is more than adequate. After only 2 days with this bag, I knew it wasn't for me so I returned it and am currently trying out the Osprey Elroy.

Comments about REI Quantum Computer Messenger Bag:
For the most part, I agree with the other two reviews. The stiched-in shoulder strap would be much improved if it attached with clips. The bag does not sit upright. The cover buckles are cumbersome to access. And the material for the outer bottle pocket and accessory pocket seems flimsy. On the other hand, I like the variety of accessory pockets, particluarly the laptop access from the outside. Despite its seemingly flimsy construction, the bag will take a lot of weight. When I travel, the bag typically holds 15-20 pounds of laptop and other "stuff", including water bottles in each of the outside pockets. Since I am not willing to put out the $$$ for a Timbuk2 or other high-end, higher-priced bag, this one is a good compromise. For that reason, I recommend it.

Comments about REI Quantum Computer Messenger Bag:
The bag looked great on the shelf, and rummaging through it in the store it seemed like it had space for all my gadgets, pens, files, and laptop, but when I loaded it up things went South. With a laptop on board, picking the bag up by the handle makes it feel like the bag is going to flip over and the contents are going to spill out. When holding the bag by the strap it lists to the side and the bag bunches up at the top. The bag just plain hangs funny by both strap and handle.
The shoulder pad did not have enough grippy material to keep it stuck to my shoulder, but at least it was comfortable while it was there. The strap is sewn to the bag rather than attached with swivels, so I found myself untwisting it all the time; super annoying when you want to grab and go.
I really like the vertical gadget pocket on the outside end of the bag. On the other side is a water bottle pocket, but only for sipping size bottles; no Nalgene bottles here. The material the pocket is made out of seemed flimsy, like it would be good for a liner, but not something for outside the bag that needs to withstand repeated bottle abuse or the ability to withstand brushing up against something abrasive like a building etc.
I think this bag probably looked great on the design table, but I am surprised it made it out of field testing.
I took it back and exchanged for a Timbuk2 Commuter. I just wish the TB2 looked as stylish...
