Comments about Magellan Triton 500 GPS Receiver:
I bought 2. One worked, one didn't. Magellan requests that malfunctioning units be sent to them, not place of purchase. However, they require the user to pay more ($15 in my case) to FedEx their junk back to them. They sent the unit back to me; it still didn't work. It is two months later, and I still don't have a proper resolution. I finally spoke with someone in the US today, and he flat out told me he wasn't going to do anything additional to resolve my concerns.I am mostly bummed, cause I have a bunch of Topo! state maps, and they only work on Magellan products...
Service and delivery comments:
Customer service was overall horrible.
The techs in India did what they could. Once they believed me that the unit was defective, they let me return it for service, but I had to pay (why?).
The unit, however, came back to me with the same problems as it had when I sent it to them. What a waste.
It is very hard to contact anyone in the US. Very, very, very hard...
Just use REI to return the defective product. DO NOT RETURN TO MAGELLAN!!!

Comments about Magellan Triton 500 GPS Receiver:
The Sat. lockon is unbelievable. It is snowing out and I am indoors and it still locks on to satellites. This is important to me because I am in forests hiking a great deal. The unit is compact and very easy to use plus it downloads my national geographic topo ontos SD cards. I love my Triton 500 !!!

Comments about Magellan Triton 500 GPS Receiver:
The Triton 500 seemed like a great deal - it was on sale even! Then you discover that it comes with noda, zip, zilch, in the way of base maps, and that's OK if... your a PC user and own TOPO! map software... However, you can't upload maps from a Mac to the Triton 500...I have been a Mac user and an avid TOPO! user for sometime - printing maps and up/downloading waypoints and routes to my old/other GPS, a Garmin Foretrex 101. It all works great considering TOPO! can be a bit "buggy" from time-to-time!![and no - this won't make me become a PC owner!][@]

Comments about Magellan Triton 500 GPS Receiver:
This is an excellent GPS unit. I have used Magellan units since the dawn of the GPS age, and they have never failed to offer both intuitive controls along with an un-paralleled reliability.
The Magellan Triton 500 offers a beautiful screen along with a excellent signal antenna. All of the Triton's controls are very easy to use and programming the unit is simple and fast.
In allowing the Triton series of GPS units to sync with the National Geographic TOPO maps, they are opening the horizon to an amazing and accurate series of maps that you really can put your trust into.
I have used this unit for many small day-hikes as well as a few overnight backcountry adventures. It has been reliable in finding and keeping a signal as well as holding up to whatever I throw at it.

Comments about Magellan Triton 500 GPS Receiver:
This is a great unit. I have used Garmin units most of my life and I decided to try the triton because of the ability to use National Geographic’s TOPO maps they are seamless more detail and great to work with Garmin does not have any software that is comparable.

Comments about Magellan Triton 500 GPS Receiver:
The Triton 500 is difficult to read in the sun. Provided you are using it in deep shade or the darkest forest you will be able to see the screen. Even then the characters are too small and too hard to read. The menus are difficult to get through when it is bright out. The menus are also difficult to follow and the alphabet input module it very labor intensive. Inputing Waypoints required the date to be input starting at January 2003 and punching through each month to May 2009. The unit does not come with a manual but does have a 22 page booklet on a CD. The software is very primitive. The base map it comes with is way below basic in detail. To use a more detailed map you have to buy it and load it to the unit. I found the Garmin eTREX to be twice as fast to setup, use and much easier to read in the sun. The batteries in the Triton 500 went dead in two hours of use.

Comments about Magellan Triton 500 GPS Receiver:
Right up front, I'm not a technical guy but here are some things that if you're looking for in a GPS, don't buy this one. First, The product support is a joke. If you like advice like "restart your computer" or "use another computer" that's what you'll get. The base map is also a joke. I bought this because I have a Maestro in my car and LOVE it. The Triton is nothing like it. You have to buy the National Geographic map package. The National Gographic support is also terrible. There's no phone number at all and the on line support simply sends you a link to an on line owners manual- and it doesn't address the problem. I think I'm going to return both the unit and the software. Because of the slow National Geographic support response, I've been trying to get the bug out of my software for 2-days. Bottom line: It's really isn't worth it!

We use this for geocaching it gets us pretty close to the caches. How the SD card slot closes is very nice.

Comments about Magellan Triton 500 GPS Receiver:
I bought this because it was substantially on sale, now i know why. Magellan software support is pathetic. No Mac support and it doesn't even support the National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps. The actual user interface on the Triton is not bad and the satellite reception is solid, the lack of real support ruins what could be a decent product. Also, they ought to use MiniUSB connections instead of their goof screw in connections so you could use the same charger for your cell phone to power you GPS. It seems like a bit of a shameless attempt to get you to buy accessories.
I had always used Garmin units but i decided to give Magellan a shot because of price. It is pretty easy to see why Garmin is a class above Magellan. Spend the extra money and buy another unit with the same features as this one. I am returning this GPS.

Comments about Magellan Triton 500 GPS Receiver:
The compass is very screwy and the battery life is lacking. The QVGA screen although nice, might be the reason for the battery life. Currently there is an offer for free topo map the makes the the not so bad. Unlike other products there is no turn by turn, I bought this for hiking so thats not an issue. The menu, isn't the easiest, but it only takes a few minutes to figure out.
