The Minimalist is a great jacket for those needing wet protection, when the weather is mild. Great for urban, doesn't feel restricting, and looks great with jeans and skeaks when the weather turns a bit foul. Don't expect this to be an insulated, ery warm jacket. It's not meant to be that. It's a comfortable, stylish shell that you wear over a sweater or T-shirt when you need to repel a little rain. I live in NYC, so don't spend a whole lot of time in nature (but I do spend a lot of time outdoors), so I can't comment on it's ability to assist you on hike and camping, and the like. Long story short, it's one of my favorite items of clothing. Period.

I bought this jacket for a three week trip around New Zealand. I needed something that wouldn't be too bulky or heavy in my luggage and also be multi-purposed. Due to the variability of environment around the island and where we traveled, this jacket was great on windy beaches, cold tramps to the top of mountains, and for wet strolls through the rainforests. I loved how I could just use the jacket with just my one shirt layer and still be comfortable when it got windy. Even if temperatures got warm, it was breathable enough that I was not sweating. Plus it has great zippers around the armpit area so you can have some ventilation. When it was raining, I was still bone dry after half an hour. I was really impressed at how warm I was with just a few layers underneath when we were around the glacier areas. If you have the money to spend and you are a regularly hiking or camping in cool/cold, windy, or wet places this is a worthy purchase!

I love this minimalist jacket! This is my newest go-to jacket for commuting via bike. It's waterproof and windproof - a perfect shell, year round.
Re: sizing - I apparently have a different fit than some of these other reviews. I'm 5'8" 150lb and generally wear a medium. I sized down to a small on this jacket, still with plenty of room for a dri-fit baselayer, fleece/wool midlayer, and this over top. I don't like to have a ton of extra room, since it just flaps in the wind and increases drag. The small size is perfectly fitted with room for laying underneath.
I love that the hood isn't cumbersome. I wish I had the option to remove it, but it's easy to tuck flat against my back, and doesn't move while I'm riding. The front pockets are HUGE - lots of room to stash things, but I'm on a road bike and can't use a lot of the height in the pockets while I'm bent forward.
All in all, I actually returned a Novara cycling jacket in trade for this. It works well for bike commuting year round in Chicago, but also has all of the basic funtions that make it great for backpacking or even just walking the dog. I look forward to wearing it for years!

After reading the reviews and viewing the pictures, I thought I was (finally) getting a lady-cut jacket that would hug my curves. Alas, this jacket makes a perfect rectangle when laid flat. Lady-cut it is not. The extra length means that it's tight around my hips, volumionus around my waist, and perfect at the chest and shoulders. The only difference between this and other rain jackets is that it is maybe a little slimer cut at the shoulder and a little longer, making the overall silhouette less bulky. I'm also disappointed at some of the features. I do a lot of bike touring and I expected the minimalist to be extra light, but it's on the heavy side, and the hood does not tuck away like most rain jackets.
The good: It looks high-quality and well-made. The red color is vibrant and the heavier, matte material looks nice. The visor part of the hood is stiff, so the rain will stay out of your eyes. It's roomy enough at the top that I don't feel restricted while biking. I got this jacket on sale and it was a really good deal for gortex, so I'll hang on to it despite the disappointing fit.

Bought this Jacket for our 8 day West Highland Way hike in Scotland UK in August 2012. I bought it because of its claim of waterproofness. It was not. We had several 10 hour days with nonstop rain and after 1.5 hours, the coat started leaking, you could see the water bead up inside the coat and it leaked into the pockets. I had my camera zipped in my pocket to keep it dry and it got wet and stopped working. There was a thimble full of water in each pocket coming from the inside out I think. The brightness of the coat would turn dark once water got through. The positive was it dried fast, kept the wind off, was lightweight and comfortable. It's a nice coat for drizzle but not constant rain. Never put anything in the pockets unless they are in a plastic baggie, I learned the hard way.

Love this jacket. I bought it for travel but now wear it all the time. It is very well made, lightweight, and folds up into nothing (I've stuffed it in my purse) but is still great in rain and wind. I especially like the arm vents and how little noise this jacket makes. I had to return a less expensive Marmot and a similar North Face style because the rustling sound was too annoying.

I love this jacket - it was my first Marmot jacket, but it won't be my last. It is billed as a rain jacket, but really, its a perfect, lightweight coat that happens to work wonders in wet weather. I wear it all of the time now and am considering buying a second color. For reference's sake I bought the "Team Red" color, which is a perfect cherry red with a charcoal gray liner. I usually wear a medium in The North Face and other brands, but to be honest, this is a little more snug of a medium. In retrospect, I think I should have got a large as I really can't wear a sweater under this jacket. Oh well.
