Comments about National Geographic Adirondack Explorer 3D:

I'd recommend it to a friend, but only if they didn't need lots of detail. And I would really rate this product 3.5 stars. Better than 3 but not quite 4.

I purchased the National Geographic Adirondack Park 3d explorer as cheaper alternative to the Topo State Series for NY, which combines with NJ for over 3x the price. Since I have no plans to hike the wilds of New Jersey and restrict my NY trips to the 'Dacks, I figured this would be a more useful, cheaper alternative.

In my short time playing around with it, it appears that all (or most?) of the useful functions on the normal Topo State products are here and I'm excited to start planning some hiking and paddling trips in the Adirondacks for this coming summer.

Having said that, here are my gripes:
Why did NG choose to use poorer resolution map data for this product? It appears to be based off of 1:50,000 map data. The State series products all use the more detailed 1:24,000 data from the 7.5' series USGS maps...this is what I was hoping for at the finest scale zoom view.

Also, the zoom scales are clumsy. I like the State Series choices better. In this product, there are HUGE jumps between the scales, especially between the middle two.

ADK Parks gives you the following scales:
1:4000000
1:865000
1:50000 (1:50K Map data)
1:25000 (says 25K map data but just 50K zoomed in)

While the State Series give you these much more evenly spaced scales:
1:4000000
1:865000
1:327360
1:50000
1:25000 (actual USGS 7.5' (1:24K) map data)

All in all, it does what it says and I'll likely keep it and use it, but if you're really after the higher resolution, more detailed maps, get the Topo NY/NJ State Series.
