Comments about Garmin Topo United States Maps 2008 100K DVD:
I was initially excited about this product. I had been using the 2000(?) version of Topo with my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx. In a side-by-side trial using two 60CSx's, one with old topo and the other with 2008, the GPS running 2008 continiously project my position 100 feet (+/-)north and east of the roads shown on the map. The older version of Topo was always on target.I contacted Garmin about this issue (having experienced this problem when working with GIS data, topos and aerials, in different coordinate systems, typically NAD27 to NAD83). They acknowledged that this was an issue, but that they had no intention of fixing the problem.I am now seeking a refund for this product from REI.

Comments about Garmin Topo United States Maps 2008 100K DVD:
I have only used this in WA state Cascades and San Juan Islands. It has shown my location very accuratly, I did not notice 100ft of inaccuracy. I also have the previous version and they seem to function similarly. very easy to transfer data both directions to Garmin Etrex Vista. Detail is adequate for this gps.

Comments about Garmin Topo United States Maps 2008 100K DVD:
My experience with topo 2008 is that it lacks much detail. When I'm going into an area, I like to carry 7.5 minute maps, but topo 2008 lacks even detail found in 15 minute maps. My experience has been in Southern Nevada and California. Garmin seems to avoid Nevada. I've found errors in topo 2008 as well as City Navigator.

Comments about Garmin Topo United States Maps 2008 100K DVD:
Simply unable to transfer any useful data to Garmin etrex vista. Software surprisingly useless. Tried many ways to modify parameters both with the unit and download wizard and this software seems to always end in "communication error" which is disappointing after a long download. Attempting to download for the Topo US 2008 CD also erases the database that comes on the unit!!! This leaves you with NO data in the GPS.
National Geographic's mapping software not compatible with downloading but still is a seemingly more funcitonal product and actually works with the Garmin units.

Comments about Garmin Topo United States Maps 2008 100K DVD:
The software was easy to setup. It brings enough map details for hiking, driving, and kayaking. All state and national parks show up along w/ trails, rivers, roads... Adding waypoints and routes for kayaking were very easy and detailed with quick transfer to my GPSMAP 60CSx.

Comments about Garmin Topo United States Maps 2008 100K DVD:
Topographical data - contour lines, summits, rivers, etc. - is high quality, but accuracy of street data is inconsistent. I live in a newish subdivision and some (but not all) of the streets are misplaced by several hundred feet. I've reported this to Garmin but so far no reply.
Software is easy to use but transferring large volumes of data to my GPS unit (eTrex Vista HCx) is quite slow. A minor irritant is that if you want to transfer one or two more maps in addition to the data already transferred then you have transfer everything all over again - it doesn't seem like you can do an incremental transfer.

I’m using TOPO 2008 with a Garmin MAPGPS 60CSx unit that also has City Navigator 8 loaded on it. I use the TOPO software to verify my location on the paper map. I see in some of the reviews that folks are trying to use the TOPO software to route or are expecting trails to be loaded. I’ve had no problems with routing between way points that I’ve created on my PC first and loaded to the GPS unit. I don’t think Garmin ever made the clams that the TOPO was anything other topographical information. The scale is 1:100,000. Some trails are pre-loaded but as trails move over the years I’ve learned that one should always carry the paper map too. So far I’ve found that the elevation information is as accurate as the GPS unit will allow it to be. The location of water sources is very accuratetoo (in the PA, WV and ME states). The fact the road information is so detailed is just a plus when hiking and crossing roads. Now I don’t have to switch back and forth between TOPO and City Navigator for road name while I’m in the middle of nowhere!

Buyer Beware: check it out before you buy.I tried to plan a weekend backpack trip to the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin with this software. I was disappointed to find that the long-established Ice Age Trail of Wisconsin, was not accurately marked, and FOR MILES DID NOT EXIST AT ALL in the database. To boot, no campgrounds nor forest roads nor parking lots depicted either. You have to have a route to put the information into the GPSMAP 60CSX. I could not plan a route. I have nothing to transfer to my shiny new GPS, which in comparison to my old GPS12, is not any better. To boot, the granularity of the TOPO lines is so course as to be a total JOKE.My conclusion is that this software is useless. I am out the [$] for the software plus another $400 for the GPS. The GPS works, but for my money, if all I can use it for is to mark waypoints, I already had a 10-year old Garmin GPS-12 $500 later and sorely disappointed, I am going to investigate if you can use the National Geo. maps and if not, I will be seeing how much I can get for the whole on ebay.My suggestion is to STAY AWAY FROM GARMIN!!!

The SW -works- fine, it's just not as featured as I'd like. Viewing a profile is a separate window and you can't have that and the map on the same screen. More detail would be great. I hiked through the Shining Rock Wilderness for 16.5 miles and while the features (peaks and gaps) were OK, the trails were useless.
No problem going back and forth to a Garmin Vista HCx. Communication is fast and easy. Too bad this is the only SW that can download maps to the GPS.
I will probably buy either the DeLorme or National Geo SW for more detail.
