Comments about Coast LED E-Lantern:
This product is the best portable light, out of 6 similar products that I've bought for comparison in the last year. The main benefit is the soft, diffused light from the frosted lens. Even other lanterns with frosted lenses produce harsher light. This light is very bright, and adjustable by dimmer, making it great for reading. The unit is well built, and feels solid, but slightly heavier than some other products. The overall design is more simple and elegant than other products (e.g. the way the batteries fit into the unit). There is a very useful battery life indicator (green, yellow, or red, to indicate remaining life). I'm ordering several more to give as gifts, this product is definitely best of breed, if you're needing a small, portable and battery powered light.

Comments about Coast LED E-Lantern:
On a beautiful starlight night I don't want to be blinded by my lantern! That's one way this lantern is unique. The lens is frosted, so the light is diffused, and the LED puts out a soft glow rather than a harsh beacon.
Dimmer function is useful, and also saves power.
Has a built in battery monitor: green=good, yellow=warning, red=close to the end. I use rechargable NiMh batteries.
This is a VERY clever and useful item, very well designed.

Comments about Coast LED E-Lantern:
Looks like I have to get in line to write a good review of this lantern!
This is currently the best LED lantern I've had. Others are too bright, or drain the batteries when off. I currently use this lantern to light up a shed as well as the table on the patio at night when the neighborhood gets together for a barbecue. It has a dimmer, so you have it bright for clean-up, or dim for mood, and the frosted lens means no one's eyes gets blasted.
As soon as Coast comes out with an even more compact model like some of those that collapse upon themselves, I'm getting it for backpacking. This one is light enough for backpacking, but takes up twice as much space as it could.
The gift idea is a good one.
I haven't tried it for reading as I usually use my LED headlamp for that.

Coast does it again! This lantern is bright and easy to use. The housing is very durable and battery life lasts pretty long. I had a problem removing the TEST ME wire from the base, but i returned it and got another one. Works great for me!

Comments about Coast LED E-Lantern:
After reading many reviews, I decided on this LED lantern. It is compact, light-weight, puts out pretty good light for its size, seems very weather-proof, is solidly built, and takes 4 AA batteries. Using rechargeable batteries, which are easy to pack and store, this lantern can last for days and days. The light output is equivalent to one florescent bulb in a large, very heavy, old-style lantern; but not equivalent to two florescent bulbs. This LED lantern easily illuminates a bedroom or bathroom during a power outage, or a tent. It is a good augment to a camp fire, but don't look for this light to illuminate an entire camp site. The lens is diffused to make the light (and lantern) very easy to look at. The light almost has a very slight blue tint, which makes objects easier to see. Due to its light weight and compact design, it is very versatile and can be taken anywhere.

Comments about Coast LED E-Lantern:
ON/OFF switch started to malfunction after two months of regular use (approx 4 times/week, ~3 hours each use). It will be frustrating if you cannot turn off the lamp.
One other issue is that battery life is much shorter than the manufacturer's claim.
It only last 10 to 13 hours, not 30 hours on a new set of batteries.
If you dim the light to the lowest setting (light output so low that it is unusable), then you may get 30 hours. There is lots of heat accumulating at the top metal part of the lamp. May be this heat generation is the cause of short battery life. My understanding is that LED lamps normally does not generate heat.

Comments about Coast LED E-Lantern:
Great light output, small, compact, if it was $30.00 I would give it 5 stars.
