Comments about M-Rock Biscayne 501 Camera Case:

The design of this compact camera case (i.e. dimensions, padding, pouch placement, flap cover, durable outer construction, and even the olive colour) are just PERFECT for my little Sony Cyber-shot camera. I could not have designed a better camera case for my compact digital had it been custom-made for my make and model, and I was so pleased to find it at REI.

The approximate dimensions of the softly lined main pocket are about the size of a deck of cards (or perhaps a pack of cigarettes if you will), so it will fit a great number of the currently popular compact digitals. Through experience, I've learned that the quick and convenient one-handed access to the main compartment by way of a signal flap lid secured by a Fastex buckle is the best configuration. A Velcro flap is equally fast, but it is noisy and under moderate use will start to shag/pile up and fail. A zipper or a dual access zipper are just too slow and inconvenient to deploy and resecure, have an annoying tendency to jam or de-track, and in most practical conditions really requires both hands to operate. This may seem like a small picky detail, but, what happens in the reality of travel and exploration is that you tend to take far less of those great candid, impulsive snapshots of some interesting thing, or vista, that you happen across if you can't just whip out your camera and quickly shoot a photo. Believe me, those extra seconds to access/deploy a camera often make the difference on whether you get or even attempt a shot or not.

There is a tiny mesh zipper pouch for spare memory card(s). Great design because the Sony memory card is so small (about the size of a quarter) and could easily fall out of an open topped pocket or elastic holder, or tumble around in a larger pocket.

The front pocket, to my delight, perfectly fits a 4 AA Battery case (or 4 loose AA batteries). I've mentioned this many times regarding personal electronics, but I have learned through much travel experience that I prefer devices that use commonly available, standard sized Alkaline batteries (readily available, readily replaceable, dependable and predictable battery life). Hard to find and expensive proprietary power packs, internal batteries, and even rechargeables don't do you much good 1 week away from electricity (or in your voltage/amperage for that matter), not to mention the fact that ALL rechargeables degrade in efficiency with repeated use.

The one flaw in the M-Rock Biscayne is the plastic belt clip. Under anything except the gentlest use, the clip is TOTALLY INADEQUATE to secure the otherwise wonderful camera pouch to a belt, a pack strap, or other bags/luggage. Walking around, I found it slipped off my belt whenever I sat down. Attached to my sling pack strap, I found it would spontaneously detach at random times (like in the overhead bins of airlines) and I nearly lost my camera several times as a result. Although it comes with a nice, high quality camera strap system with metal clips, I am not really a camera strap sort of person. This is the reason why I rate this camera case as a FOUR instead of a perfect FIVE.

Note: I love the design of this camera case so I removed the plastic clip entirely and replaced it with a much hardier, positively locking Fastex buckle and nylon strap attachment.
