Comments about Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's:
To the person who found their version lost its some of its loft: This isn't due to fiber breakdown, it's due to fiber clumping, which is common to most fleeces, and can be cured with a good water repellent treatment, which "unsticks" the fibers when you machine dry on LOW heat (ignore any drip-dry directions). Fiber clumping is why brand new fleece looks so much "plusher." To restore most of the original loft, just treat with NikWax PolarProof or a similar product once in a while. It also makes the fleece remarkably effective in the rain, if you don't mind the water beading on you.
The new one is very warm for the weight and moderate thickness - it is actually more efficient and nicer looking than the current R2 and R3 models from Patagonia, which are the "gold standard." In terms of warmth and thickness, it is as warm, or warmer than, Polartec 300 but MUCH lighter and compresses well (but not as well as down; on the other hand it is not as finicky as down).
Yes, the original Monkey Man was too thick and made me feel claustrophobic. The new one doesn't have that problem.
Stuff one of the new ultralight windbreakers/light rain shells (3 ounces) from Marmot or Patagonia or GoLite in one of the pockets to handle wind and light rain.
This is a rare piece equally at home in the Mission looking for a burrito, on a summer hike in Sierras on a cool evening, or at a ski resort (on the slope or in the lodge).
Enjoy!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's:
It's extremely comfortable and warm. However, it is not durable at all. My seatbelt wore out the fleece just driving to work. So, I won't even take it backpacking because all the straps and weight will do the same. But, it is so comfortable in the cold. Don't but it for backpacking. Buy it for cold weather.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's:
I was truely amazed with this jacket when I removed my outer shell and discovered all the perspiration that had been pulled away from my skin, base layer and through the monkey man fleece. After sweating all day hiking in the mountains, I was completely dry. The most comfortable jacket for all conditions that I've ever owned. Match this up with a water/windproof shell and you'll be set for anything winter has to throw at you.

I usually don't right reviews like such, but I simply can't help myself! I am a first year college student, and usually shop at active for style. However, i'm a sucker when it comes to quality and comfort. REI is the place for both.
Personally, I tried on every single sweatshirt and jacket at the store. The monkey man jacket caught my eye and felt about the best. The comfort factor compares to that of a down jacket(less bulky). Style wise it is unique. I don't see too many people wearing it, which seperates me from the crowd. So far I had the product for a week and got smiles from 3 cute girls. It is always nice to get a smile from a pretty lady.
I'm a skiier at heart, and can't wait to use it up at Big Bear, and Mammoth.
p.s. The color, brown, is the best... It's called a monkey man jacket for a reason.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's:
Very warm just put it under a shell if there's wind. It's not wind proof and it makes no claims to be. Great for backpacking in southern utah in the middle of winter.very light and packs fairly small. Not quite as warm as a down sweater but very close and about half the price. I've never touched a monkey but it's as plush as my cat minus the purr!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's:
The Monkey Man fleece is a great cold weather option. I bougth mine several years ago, and it's still functional and warm. As some other reviewers have pointed out though, it does lose its loft over time. You really shouldn't wash it until it needs it, as I've found that repeated washings causes the fibers to break-down, thus decreasing its warmth factor. It's great for keeping you warm around town, or at camp, but it has no wind blocking ability - if there's a breeze you'll feel it without a shell. I prefer to use my as a layer to wear while hiking in cold temperatures, and as an additional layer to wear to sleep in when the mercury plumits. Wearing it while you sleep easily ups the warmth factor, and you'll wake toasty, but comfortable. The fleeces dries fairly quickly if wet, and deflects small amounts of moisture, but I wouldn't count on using it if you're caught in a down-poor in cold weather. One last comment, while the fleece is compressable, it is somewhat bulky, and I tend to use it less on longer trips because a down jacket/vest works even better and is less bulky.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's:
I chose black/black XXL. Love the look, style, and warmth. This one didn't have the sleeve thumb holes which are a great addition, BTW. Cons: The fleece tends to mat down and lose it's loft in wear areas. Wish the sleeves were lined, as it is difficult to get on over any long sleeved shirt that isn't "slick". Great as a jacket liner or for kicking around the lodge. Overall an excellent item. Will probably buy a 2nd color.

This will keep you very warm on cold days. This fleece with a baselayer and a shell is all you need. I actually get hot if I have everything zippered up. Feels true to size and the thumb holes for the sleeves, are a nice touch.

The only problem with this fleece is that it gets matted in the arm pits. That is the only thing I can think of.
