  • Three-section telescoping poles extend to a maximum length of 55 inches and compact to 27.5 inches for easy storage and transport

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:

A very poor choice on my part. I failed to research poles and bought this one. They fail to adjust and tighten. They do come loose and collapse. Don't buy these. There are other good ones out there. They will let you down when you most need them, especially in the cold.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:

These poles seemed nice in store and around the yard at home however, once I got them on the trail with a loaded pack they failed miserably. One collapsed a short ways into a 5.5 mile hike and was difficult to get locked again. It collapsed two more times and stopped locking altogether. The other pole worked somewhat better but it too came unlocked from time to time but did not outright fail like the previously mentioned pole.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:

Don't waste your time buying these; learn from my mistakes.

I purchased two pairs of REI Ascent's and both had problems with the locking mechanism. The first pair would lock out then slowly but surely become unlocked until it got in the anti-shock mode. I gave REI the benefit of the doubt and tried another pair. The second pair wouldn't lock out after the very use. So I had one working pole and one collapsed--not what Im looking for on a gnarly trail.

I don't know what the solution (what brand) but Im determined to find some good ones and I'll be staying away from REI Ascents.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:

This product has some very good features such as sturdiness, lightweight, and a nice grip.

Unfortunately, this is a situation where the negative far outweigh the positives.

I took this on 4 snowshoeing trips. The first trip, they worked fine during the trek but I had difficulty collapsing them at the end. The second one, the poles collapsed several times during the trek but I was able to re-lock them. The third trip, same as #2, and the guide had to dis-assemble it once to get it to re-lock. the fourth time, same as third but I couldn't get it to collapse at the end without great difficulty. When I got home and tried to extend them, both poles fell apart on me with the middle section firmly embedded in the top section. I am taking them back right now for something with a better lock.

Too bad, as they really felt good when they were working properly.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:

First set of poles I bought, in order to see what I liked, before I moved up. I hike on rugged trails all over Central, and Northern AZ.
Light and nimble enough to pick through scree and talus with ease (even for a novice).
Strong enough to support me when I do slip.
They do (slowly) collapse, on occasion, but is mostly do to operator error. They were a starter set, but I'm happy with them, and am sticking with them.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:

5 of us bought these poles to train for a Half Dome hike. All of us had problems with the twist-style locking mechanism which would often fail to lock and cause the poles to collapse. I returned mine and got a pair with a Black Diamond brand with a lever-style locking mechanism for $20 less and they work great. The new pair I bought also has a more comfortable strap.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:

I have used these poles on every hike I have taken. Reciently I took them on a trip up Mt Baker in Washington, that is were I first experienced problems. The twist lock would "untwist" and collapse, and when you are crossing running water or going down hill and you are relying on the pole to help you these are extremely unreliable. I returned them and got another pair. The second time I experienced a problem was in the Grand Canyon on a rim to rim hike. The pole again unlocked and I was unable to get the pole to retract back up and it broke. So once again I will have to go back to [...], but this time I will not get another pair, I will get poles that have a locking lever instead.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:

These poles feature an adjustable feature that allows for rigid or shock absorbtion mode. This sounds neat. However, Mine constantly switched modes on its own. The locks also frequently slipped and I returned it for a refund.

Comments about REI Ascent Shocklight Trekking Poles - Pair:

These generally are light and sturdy, and once I have gotten them to the desired length, they have never collapsed. The main problem I have, which is significant, is that the locks do not work very well. Every time I want to change the length, I have to turn them a ton, and take them apart and keep fighting with them in order to get the locks to actually lock. This takes a long time and is irritating.

The minor problem I have is that the straps are not comfortable.
