Comments about SteriPEN Solar Charging Case:

There is a rechargeable battery problem in the SteriPEN Solar Charging Case units I've seen (4). The Tenergy batteries have lower capacity than their stated 900 mAh, and 3 of 8 batteries did not retain a charge even several days without use. Hydro-Photon, Inc. has offered to replace them.SteriPEN-estimates 35 1-liter purification cycles per battery charge in the user guide. I got only 15. [@]

Comments about SteriPEN Solar Charging Case:

This case was fairly rugged and protected the pen well, but it had VERY poor charging performance and the expected operating requirements are unreasonable.

The supplied batteries are expensive and were exhausted within one day.

After two and a half days in the charger, they still were not fully charged.

The manufactuers instructions for the solar charger would require a fixed position perfectly facing the suns rays (unobstructed).

When I am backpacking, I don't have time to sit still for 1-2 days waiting for the battery charger to work.

The car charger function is useless to you inthe woods when you need to be purifying your water.

This ended up being an expensive carrying case.

        High tech doesn't always work!

Comments about SteriPEN Solar Charging Case:

I obtained this unit with Adventurer set. The first time I put batteries in the unit the springs holding them broke. I returned it and was sent another unit. It takes too long to charge the batteries to be useful and along with a power sucking steri-pen you could easily be without water purification rather quickly. This is a novelty item sold to techies. Anything that requires batteries to work or needs a unit such as this to function is going to pose problems in the back country. Use chlorine dioxide drops or a filter if your water is silty or dirty. These gimmick items seem neat and interesting, but generally don't hold up and work well. You only find this out when you're 3 days into a 7 day hike in the mountains.
