The Art of Cycling empowers readers with the big picture of riding a bicycle in America.

  • Author: Robert Hurst
  • Softcover; 263 pages; black-and-white photos; illustrations
  • The Globe Pequot Press; copyright 2007
  • Safety is the primary topic, but Hurst also delves into the history, psychology, sociology and ecoomics of modern cycling

Covering much more than just riding a bike in traffic, author Robert Hurst paints, in uncanny detail, the challenges, strategies and art of riding a bike on America's streets and roadways. His primary concern is safety, but he goes well beyond the usual tips and how-to, diving into the realms of history, psychology, sociology and economics.

You'll find useful insights to consider while pedaling the next commute, grocery run or training ride. Riding a bike will never be the same!

Comments about The Art of Cycling: A Guide to Bicycling in 21st Century America:

If you ride at all in an urban environment and you only get one book on cycling, The Art of Cycling should be it.

The advice in this book is practical and it could easily reduce your risk of injury or death. I have been a bicycle commuter 5 days a week for several years and I learned a few things from this book.

The author's positions are reasonable, balanced and pragmatic. He states that cyclists will be safest when they act like vehicles, since their actions will be predictable and safe. He does not assume that everyone will follow all the rules (most won't), but he advocates a reasonable middle ground between rigid vehicular cycling and chaos.
