Comments about Yakima King Joe 3 Bike Carrier:

Have had this rack for a year. Great design and very sturdy. I bought this rack because I have an Acura TL and didn't want a roof rack and couldn't put a hitch mount rack on my model year. The rack goes on in about 5 mins. I would say that it's a bit tight to get three bikes on there so if you have high-end road bikes or large MTBs, and you're going to take more than 2, this isn't the rack for you.

Comments about Yakima King Joe 3 Bike Carrier:

The only thing that could be better which I already remedied is that it doesn't have a lock. So I just lock it and my bike or three bikes to my trailer hitch. This rack has allowed many a wonderful ride just a bit further from my house than I want to bike and more.

Comments about Yakima King Joe 3 Bike Carrier:

-USER-FRIENDLY- now that I'm familiar with it, I can get it and my bike on my car in about 5 minutes.
        -STABLE - I've had 3 bikes on a 60-mile round-trip drive.
        -FITS OVER SPOILERS.
        - Good for taking your bike camping, meeting friends at a park, or doing routes that are out of your usual biking range.
-CRITICAL to tighten the straps again AFTER the bikes are loaded. This is stated in the directions but would be easy to overlook.
-RECOMMEND using a bungee cord to hold the front tire in place (so it can't turn and scratch the bumper). The strap that comes with the rack is harder to tighten and doesn't work as well. I got scratches when I used it.
-RECOMMEND using a bungee to hold all bikes together if hauling multiple bikes (so they don't knock against each other).
-NOTE - if you have a "girls" style bike with a y-frame (no top tube), you will need an adapter bar to be able to use this rack.

Once the car rack is on correctly, the bike and bike rack is very secure. Make sure all straps are as tight as you can get them and then check them again after the bike is on the rack.

Comments about Yakima King Joe 3 Bike Carrier:

My last two cars cannot accept a rooftop rack. This is the next best solution. Biggest downside are the hooks that go under the trunk lid. While padded, they may scratch the finish. You may also need to pop your trunk to mount the hooks. That said, it takes about 5 minutes once you get it down. I've had mine at least 4 years and it is just starting to show some wear. Despite what Yakima instructions say, it will fit over SOME spoilers. I second what other said about bungees. I also suggest getting extra frame straps for your peace of mind!

Comments about Yakima King Joe 3 Bike Carrier:

I Recently purchased the Yakima King Joe 3 bike carrier. I first compared this carrier to others and found the Yakima to be superior for the price on many levels.

I was impressed with the solid construction of the frame, the quality of the buckles, straps, and vinyl coated hooks. Also, I found that the design of the bike cradles and straps, critical to securing the bike to the carrier, far exceeded the quality and design intent of most other bike carriers.

The rubber hold-down straps are exceptionally thick and offer a wide range of adjustment for securing the bike frame to the cradle, a very important feature. Also, this carrier provides for 6 points of anchorage to the vehicle, resulting in a solid, stable piece of equipment even after loading our bikes. (Although we only use 2 bikes, I chose the 3 bike carrier to gain the extra weight carrying capacity.)

If I had to point out one thing that I would have added, or changed to this carrier, it would have been the addition of built-in red reflectors at the ends of the horizontal tubes. Other than that, Yakima has produced a quality piece of equipment.

Its built very well and looks nice also. The bike straps are a nice thick good quality rubber. this thing is built well all the way around. its easy to put on the car, i have a mid sized sedan and it fits with out any issue. The only con at all are the overly complicated instructions. use common sense and leave the instructions alone unless you are a stickler for "by the book" kinda thing. the instructions could have been summed up in a page but they insisted on adding alot of mumbo jumbo but i guess that may be due to legal reasons. either way its a solid easy to use rack so pick one up :D

Comments about Yakima King Joe 3 Bike Carrier:

Looking for a good sturdy and stable rear bike rack? This one is GREAT! I drive a 2007 Mini Cooper and was tough to find a rear bike rack that was engineered to fit most (if not all) vehicles. My car is pretty low to the ground and the design of this rack provides plenty of ground clearance. There was no swaying involved so the design proved to be well made. My car moves around like a go-cart and with every turn and bump in the road, the rack remained firmly planted to my vehicle. Large cushions prevent scratching/denting. There was also plenty of clearance between the bike and the car to prevent the pedals from hitting/scratching against my car. NO SCRATCHES!!! LOVE IT!!!!

Comments about Yakima King Joe 3 Bike Carrier:

After looking at the saris for an hour I made my decision and it was clear. I purchased the King Joe and have never looked back. It fits 2 bikes easily, haven't tried 3. A friend of mine and I went down to the Minnesota river bottoms for a day of thrashing, just as we were coming out the sky turned green, We loaded up the bikes (2) and headed home. Long story short the storm was no match for the King Joe strapped with two bikes. It fits my XJ Jeep and my Nissan Sentra like a glove. I am sure it will fit any kind of car out there. It has great rubber/foam pads that won't scratch your car. I couldn't be happier.

Comments about Yakima King Joe 3 Bike Carrier:

I used this rack to haul my mountain bike on a 1900 mile x-country road trip from TX to CA. I chose this King Joe 3 model, which is designed for three bikes, to make sure it would be sturdy enough to carry one bike that far.

Installation: The instructions were clear, adjusting it to my car was fairly easy, and it installed in less than 20 minutes. The only issue was it took a few tries for the quick trigger hub to lock into the right position for my trunk. You want to get it right so the bike arms are level. It would have been easier if the hub had markings on it rather than making you measure the arm separation to determine the right position. Bottom line - pretty easy, could have been easier.

Fit: I was worried the rack would dent the trunk but the pressure is on the bumper / license plate (not the trunk top) and the foam pads protect the paint. The strap hooks are metal but are covered with thick plastic which also protects the paint. Bottom line - no damage to my car whatsoever.

Reliability: Its important to adjust the straps after the bike is on the rack since the additional weight changes the position a bit. I never saw any slippage in the rearview mirror but still stopped every 200 hundred miles or so to check things. The straps never loosened one iota even after traveling over less than smooth roads at 80 miles per hour. Bottom line - the chance of your bike coming loose are slim to none.

Impact on bike: The rack comes with strong rubber straps that bind the bike securely. Unfortunately, the rubber left marks on my bike which only came off using a brillo pad. My bike frame also has an unusual geometry causing the rack to rub one small spot down to the metal. Bottom line - probably not an issue for most bikes. Next time I will wrap a wash cloth around the frame at the two spots where it touches the rack and straps.

Conclusion: This is a well made rack that works as promised. Your peace of mind should be high that your bike will get there in one piece without harming your car in the process. Just make sure your bike doesn't touch any metal or straps if you value your paint job.
