Comments about Novara Teflon Slick Shift Cable:
Bottom line = Do not be scared to buy this cable. It is a quality PTFE coated cable at exactly half the price of SRAM Slickwire. If you are willing to spend about 15min prepping this cable by taking the few cautionary steps below, you can help ensure a perfectly functioning cable and happier installation process.
1) Determine the appropriate metal nub end you need to use - mtb or road – but don't cut off the other end yet
2) On the end that you will be cutting off, apply a THIN layer of super glue along the entire circumference of the cable about 1 inch in length directly in front of the metal nub about to be discarded... allow glue to dry.
3) Cut within the super-glued portion of the cable directly in front of the metal nub you are not using. The superglue will help prevent the cable from fraying.
4) Lastly, apply a single, SMALL drop of superglue directly to the exposed metal strands of wire at the very end tip of the freshly cut cable... allow to dry. This will prevent the raw end from possibly snagging on the ferrule caps or the housing liner as you feed the cable through the housing.
5) Tip: before feeding the wire through the housing, coat the Teflon surface of the entire cable with a thin layer of grease to ensure optimal sliding of the cable in the housing.
Honestly folks, these extra steps are the hidden costs you pay when buying a universal cable at very competitive price. If you don't want to prep the cable then by all means just cut it and run it. However if you don't want to head back to REI for round 2, please do yourself a favor and try out the method above. Hope this helped and you enjoyed saving money as well as a headache-free installation.

Comments about Novara Teflon Slick Shift Cable:
This cable comes with sealed heads at either end so you have to cut one off prior to threading through your shifters. I used proper sharp cable cutters and the end still frayed so that it was impossible to thread without ruining the entire cable. Once it starts unraveling it continues for the length of the cable. You'd be better off buying road or Mtn specific cables at a bike store. These will be going back to REI.

Comments about Novara Teflon Slick Shift Cable:
Because this is designed to be used with either MTB or road bike controls the installer must make at least one cable cut prior to threading the cable through its housing. While not a big matter, if an unaware installer uses a poor tool to cut the cable it will fray very easily rendering the cable useless if it was cut to length using the old cable as a length guide. Other cables available that are MTB or road specific have only one end allowing the cable to be installed without having to cut one end off prior to threading the cable though its housing.
