Comments about Black Diamond Guiding Light Tent:
I've used this tent now a dozen times or so and think I'm going to return it. My major problem with this tent is the lack of seam sealing. I've sealed many tents over the years and this tent is a nightmare. They either need to significantly decrease the price of this tent or actually seal it at the factory. I can't actually imagine that anyone that built these tents has actually tried to seal one and then used it extensively.
First, the floor seam: There is a seam on the bottom of the tent all along the floor. The way that this seam is sewn makes it so you have to seal it on the outside of the tent. No matter how many days you leave it to dry silicon seam sealer remains slightly tacky. This turns your floor seam into a sandpaper strip the first time that it is used.
Second, the corners and pole pockets: The way that these are sewn into the tent make it easier to seal on the inside of the tent since there is so much excess fabric on the outside overlapping the seams. If you sealed it on the outside you would have to use twice the amount of seam sealer. However, the thicker material that these corners and pole pockets are made of is very slick on the inside; the sealer peals off after a couple of uses. Also, again, the seam sealer picks up sand that can never be washed off. I'm going to have to seal these again, for the third time. By now it isn't pretty. This time I'll seal the outside but since the material over laps the seam on the outside by about half an inch I'll have to seal both sides of every seam and use another entire tube of sealer.
It may be the case that the Epic material can't be sealed at the factory; I don't know of any other company making Epic tents that seals the Epic fabric. However, this is no reason why they can't factory seal the nylon floor, corners, and pole pockets. For this price it's just unacceptable.
Another complaint I have about the tent is setting it up. People report, with other Black Diamond tents that the set up from the inside is easy. It may very well be easy with a narrower tent but it's very hard when the width of the tent exceeds the spread of your arms. Since you have to hold the pole on both ends for the middle two poles and the fabric pockets that the poles slide into have no rigidity, it is hard to get them in right. It's even worse in the wind.
I do love the space to weight ratio, the nice color, and it's sturdiness in heavy winds. I've turned a hose on it for quite some time while trying to clean off my sandpaper seams and it has never leaked.
