Comments about Osprey Sojourn Wheeled Convertible Pack - 22'':
Bar none, hands down, after doling out repeated abuse on this bag, the Osprey Soujourn has proven to be one of my favorite travel companions of all time.
In reading the other reviews- I'll note that I too had an early model bottom bracket break off of my Meridian. After an easy return (REI has the best return policy I've ever seen) I got the Sojourn, and have had nothing but stellar performance since.
I originally purchased the Meridian, but was frustrated that the strap-on daypack was simply not practical enough (the bottom tags on the shoulder straps were too short, getting into it was difficult, and it wasn't big enough. Also- there was no way to lash on a fleece or wet rain gear, limiting the daypack's expandability.
In the end, the Sojourn suited my travel needs better than the Meridian for one giant reason: a much bigger main compartment. I had to compare the two bags side-by-side in the store because the specifications between the two threw me off, but sure enough- the Sojourn is nearly 2" deeper than the Meridian.
I took this bag last year to spend 10 days in Hawaii, and hike Kauai's Na Pali Coast. The hike to the Kalalau valley is roughly 11 miles long. The bag glided through airport after airport with ease, and the suspension system folded out quickly at the trail head. I had no problems fitting this bag in overhead compartments, or under airline seats. The mesh paneling proved itself in the hot sun, breathing nicely and not overheating my back like a heavy blanket (as some lesser travel packs are prone to do). Better yet- of all the travel bags I have owned, this is the first one with a REAL hip belt. I was able to keep the entire load firmly planted on my hips, stable even during traverses along steep scree slopes and mud slides.
The interior of the bag is simple, and well thought out. A mesh pocket in the panel held my flip flops. Internal straps kept my flat-packer contents (a nice pair of pants & 4 pressed shirts) from being wrinkled. The mesh sleeve along one side of the main compartment held socks, underwear, a first aid kit, and water filter. Camping gear (including a tiny 55 degree sleeping bag, the most ultralight 2-person tent sold, an insulated inflatable mattress) also fit in. So did a pair of dress shoes, hiking shorts, a compact rain jacket, 3 T-shirts, and wind pants. And food. And a 3-liter water bladder. The top pocket held my toiletries, a compact headlamp, compact binoculars, and a single-blade knife I bought.
If you're beginning to think "that's a lot for this little bag" you'd be right. But the bag held it all without much complaint. For a daypack, I purchased an ultralight pack with one main compartment from REI. It lashed to the outside of the Sojourn easily using the two compression straps, and served as a stuff sack for my dirty laundry on the last few days. I stuffed it into the backpack-strap section for the flight home, making use of all the space available.
Some minor gripes: Because this bag is meant to bridge the gap between roller bag and backpack, it does squeak a bit when you hike. I got used to it, and eventually just thought it was funny. People with less patience might not be as amused. And the wheels- after 22 miles with this bag on my back, the wheels did dig a bit into my hips. The solution: I now carry a small hex wrench with me, and remove the wheels at the trail head (takes about 1 minute to do). This solved the problem.
All in all, this is an excellent, practical travel bag. It allows one to save their knees when trekking through airports 1/2 the time, and trek comfortably along trails the other 1/2.

I love this piece of luggage EXCEPT I now have to return it for the third time. Had two others of different size with broken bottom bracket, broken zipper and torn cinch strap. Got a replacement and have used it less than a few times, and the bottom bracket has broken off again with brad popping off inside the suitcase. Thought Osprey would be a good name, but will have to try Eagle or REI.

I *love* this bag and have used it for trips to around Europe and the US. HOwever, I am disappointed that I will have to return it, as the bottom bracket lost 2 out of 3 screws. The bottom bracket is what keeps it upright when standing in the wheeled position. If you check ou how the bracket is attached to the bag, it appears to be a cheap afterthought vs the high quality of the rest of the bag.

I bought this product after hours of indepth research plus the advice of seasoned REI personnel ... was highly recommended. I was preparing for a 3 month trip, which included many plane flights, bus rides, difficult terrain and long distances. This bag seemed to be the perfect fit. After the first leg of the journey, the bottom bracket that holds the bag upright broke! That speaks for itself! Now, after reading other reviews on this bag, this problem seems to be common. So, why is it still being sold at REI????!!!! Enough said... action needed! [...]

The REI clerk recommended the Osprey bag. I purchased it for my daughter in Germany. It survived only a couple days of travel in Germany and the bottom bracket broke off. Since the rest of the bag was quite useable, I decided to ask a relative in Switzerland (Grandpa) to fix it. He looked & stated that the rivets were of low quality and poor strength. He replaced all of the bracket rivets with small bolts and lock-nuts - easily done. Since then, the bag has survived extensive travel in Europe via all modes of travel with no problems. The bracket has taken a beating judging from the marks & gouges on the plastic, but it holds! I recommend replacement of the rivets immediately after purchase!

Solid construction, great access to compartment, and can fit a lot of stuff in there.
The only downside--and I hesitate to mention it--is that it's larger that I'd ideally like. I needed a rolling suitcase to carry my daughter's stuff (blankets, puzzles, games, etc) and my laptop. I wish Osprey had a smaller version of this. However this is a personal criteria and has nothing to do with the suitcase itself.

I've been on two trips with this bag (one to Spain with multiple destinations) and have been thrilled with it. You'd be amazed at how much you can stuff into it. I've been able to fit it into overheads on every major airline. With two different carrying handles, the wheels, and the backpack straps - there are so many options. The only drawback I've found is that the outside front compartment has limited capacity and is tough to access when the bag is full. The top compartment is also tough to access when the bag is full - I find I don't even use it. But all in all, this bag is my traveling companion for all my trips.

You get robbed of a lot of storage space 2/2 the internal frame. External strap clips do not survive airline travel and I have had to return the bag twice. Finally called it a day and will check out other luggage options now. As far as size, it is the perfect size for weekend jaunts. Wheels well in the airport. I'm going to say that I would recommend it but I would give folks a heads up on it's glitches.

This is probably the best wheeled duffel bag around but the bottom bracket with the wheels can't withstand being lugged up stairs or down long cobbled streets. When it's stuffed to the gills the main zippers hold their own but the weaker, smaller gauge zippers on the back and top pockets cause the fabric to tear.
Bottom line: Use this for traveling, i.e. when you would normally use a suitcase. If you plan on carrying you luggage a long way in bad conditions use a backpack or a duffel. If you are staying in a four star hotel and want to retain that grizzled backpacker/adventure traveler look - buy the sojourn.

I bought this bag after a trip to Hawaii, where I had wished that I had a wheeled bag with pack straps to backpack it when necessary.
I love this bag especially because it's a carry-on for almost any flight. Some of the small commuter flights are too small - and I check the bag right on the tarmac before boarding, but it fits in the overhead just fine on all other larger aircraft.
Very durable. I did have to buy a separate day bag for my camera which I take on trips, but otherwise, it works great!
