Comments about REI Galaxy Pack:

I loved the fit and feel of this pack! I took it last year on a 40 mile hike through the Selway Wilderness and it preformed fine other than one problem, the shoulder strap stitching came undone. I took it back to the store after the hike and REI graciously exchanged it for another one. Took my new pack on a small 27 mile hike down the Oregon coast in April, stilled loved the fit but once again the stitching on the shoulder strap tore out. I’m going to return it and get another pack.

Comments about REI Galaxy Pack:

i mostly use this pack for weekend trips and it always serves me well. it is a large capacity pack so with careful packing you can go for weeks with it. it is very durable which makes it more on the heavy side but for me the trade-off is well worth not having to worry about snagging a super light weigh pack on a tree branch. it is very tall and narrow from front to back which keeps the weight closer to your body. in fact it the most narrow I've seen of larger capacity packs but due to it's height it's definately meant for longer torsos. the only thing i would change is to have softer padding on the waist belt because it gets a little uncomfortable with a heavier load. i never have a problem stuffing my sleeping bag, self inflating sleep pad, and three-man tent inside (approx 23"x8"), it's very roomy and all at a very fair price for such a pack

After I got the Hip adjustment correct, it stopped killing my shoulders. Had I not made the adjustment, I don't think I could have lifted my arms.

      • Poor Hydration Pack Spot

      Comments about REI Galaxy Pack:

The pack is both light and cheap (price-wise) for the size and features. It has good padding, adjustments, and compartments. The only real knock on it is the hydration pack holder. It is one of the side pouches and you can't fit a hydration pack larger than 1 liter in it (which is absurdly small for a hydration pack). I tuck my 3 liter hydration pack into one of the mesh pockets and let it run up and under the side pocket. Should be relatively safe there and allow me to see how full it is. If you're looking for a pack in this size range, this is the one to get. Even if you are looking for a smaller pack, this one probably gives you some extra space for the same weight and price anyways.

      Comments about REI Galaxy Pack:

I just picked up this pack after using gear from my college recreation center. For the price, it's the largest pack that is the lightest and has the most features compared to other brand name packs.

The description left some other items out including the side pockets act as sleeves for trekking poles, the top pack fly has two pockets, and the sternum strap clip includes an emerency whistle.

As for my first personal pack I haven't found much about it that I don't like. It has enough adjustments (which can be had to figure out), it has plenty of storage capacity (I fit a 4 person tent, two large pillows, and about 12 t-shirts on my test stuff).

It took me a while to get the pack adjusted right so the weight was on my hips, but after I got it it felt pretty good. I'll try and update when I put some miles on it.

        Comments about REI Galaxy Pack:

This is the first pack I have used since having an alice pack in the military. I bought this for a weekend trip with my co-workers. I was really pleased with it. I carried about 45 pounds with no problems. Its a very inexpensive but is still great quality. It may not be the most comfortable, but it was not uncomfortable at all.

If you are new to backpacking and don't want to spend to much right out the door like myself. This pack is great!

        Comments about REI Galaxy Pack:

I'm weekender, but i carry way to much, so the fact that this pack holds a good load was a big selling point. unfortunately, it's not comfortable at all with more than 45 lbs or so. Also, it's a hard pack to oranize really well. i'm an orginazation freak, and this pack makes me feel like i've just got everything "dumped in there".

The biggest selling points, it's CHEAP! compare this pack to a same size pack from Osprey or gregory, WOW, big difference. Also, it does hold a lot. (just not comfortably.)

There is not very good padding. And I do not think that it could not be used for backpacking because it is to small.Heavy loads are not good for this pack. Even though it is my first pack I think thatit will not be good for people that go backpacking.

        Comments about REI Galaxy Pack:

This is a backpack with an on-paper capacity and price that's perfect for a student; however, I can't say that this works.
I've used it on previous trips where a friend carried a tent, and this packed served well.

But, when I try to strap on a tent, the problem becomes painfully obvious. The compression straps on the side are way too short to actually strap a tent, so I have to put the tent wall inside the pack, and strap the poles on the side. This seems like a workaround until you get the tent wall wet from rain, and you wonder how much of the pack content would stay dry.

Also, it is an impossibility to put anything bigger than the 1.5L hydration pack that I have. The side loading design is actually a great idea. On the trail, you don't have to unbuckle anything to take an empty bag out to fill. However, any reasonable hiker would use at least a 2L bag, and I think that might be a struggle to put a full 2L bag in. 3L is totally out of the question.

I'm afraid I might use the REI's satisfaction policy on this pack. Had these two problems gone away, this pack is easily a 4 star pack, and great value.
