Comments about Smith's Retractable Diamond Knife and Tool Sharpener:
I've been a knife enthusiast ever since I started elementary school and I was quickly taught how to sharpen a blade and the importance of a sharp knife. I usually prefer using a wet-stone for honing a perfect blade but I given the abuse that I put my blades through, I find it very time consuming to get a good blade nowadays. I was browsing my local REI and came across this and decided to give it a try. At first, the sharpener was too coarse to provide a good edge but it did a good job cleaning up and shaping my blade but after a while I noticed that the sharpener began to get finer and give a better blade. I also used it to remove some nicks and dings out of my axe and it performed perfectly. All in all, this sharpener is very compact, which helps keep it close when it is needed and it really does a good job getting the job done. The only issue I have is that the hone is still not fine enough for me but I like having my knives razor sharp. Also, I have found that the conical half of the hone is perfect for general sharpening your typical knives while the flat side I primarily use to focus on problem areas.

Comments about Smith's Retractable Diamond Knife and Tool Sharpener:
I wanted a sharpener to attach to my fixed blade sheath. This is small and effective enough to do the job in the field.
As someone else mentioned, it's not likely to get a dull blade sharp, however I normally just give a few swipes after each major use and my edge stays keen. I like the tapered shape. In my quieter moments by the campfire, it allows me to accurately hone the serrations.
It has a hook groove to sharpen dull fishing hooks. I didn't think that I'd ever use that feature until I found some salmon throwing my old flies out of their mouths. 10 minutes sharpening my flies and I was back in action.
I prefer this type of sharpener rather than the V-shaped sharpeners that you draw your knife across. The reason is because the V-tools tend to tear the fine edge of thin blades like fillet knives.

Comments about Smith's Retractable Diamond Knife and Tool Sharpener:
I keep this thing handy sometimes to touch up a blade while in the field. Being compact and carried like a writing pen in your shirt pocket makes it easy to carry anywhere. I use it also to sharpen hooks and serrations when needed. It does a good job on serrated blades.

Comments about Smith's Retractable Diamond Knife and Tool Sharpener:
There is no outstanding way to sharpen really dull serrated edges, but this little gadget does a nice job touching them up. The tapered end adapts to different size serrations and the fixed diameter end may be used as a mini-sharpening steel for plain edges, but there are better tools for quick touch up of plain edges. Overall, it is handy enough to own, but I would not rely on this for sharpening anything other than serrated edges.

Comments about Smith's Retractable Diamond Knife and Tool Sharpener:
I never go anywhere without a sharp knife. This product is small and light enough to go into the pack for that 'just in case' situation. I like knowing that wherever I am, I can always stay sharp.
