Comments about Garmin GPSMAP 60 GPS:
I use this mainly to make tracks of where I've been. I use this feature for mountain biking and hiking. I like to make tracks and show it on TOPO! My only disappointment is that the reception is not strong enough in dense foliage. Places like Tolt MacDonald, East Tiger Mountain, and the Norse Peak Wilderness has dense foliage, thus I couldn't make tracks nor use it to locate my location. Still recommend having a map and good compass with this GPS device.

Comments about Garmin GPSMAP 60 GPS:
I bought this particular unit because it seemed to have the optimal feature set from all the available backpacking GPS devices (that are very few). My main concern was the battery life rather than color screen. It can perform much longer than the newer models from Garmin. I use it mostly as a tracking and positioning device and to get the location data on the photos I take. However, even with this unit one still needs to bring an old paper map to really know the location.
On the con side, it seems that Garmin is more concerned with the fancy interfaces than with the usability of their GPSs. The battery life leaves a lot to be desired. Somehow my cell phone can last a full week on one charge and this unit only about 30 hours. It is not possible to power the unit from a USB cable (it has the connection) not charge its batteries, which requires a separate charger and power adapter.
If there is any sign of trees the unit looses signal. On top of this, it starts putting tracking points all over the place which completely messes up any information about the exact distance traveled. A very simple filtering algorithm in firmware would fix it, but Garmin doesn't seem to be concerned with it - they are a monopoly after all.
I would recommend this unit to friend despite all the stated above simply because there isn't anything better on the market.

Comments about Garmin GPSMAP 60 GPS:
I bought this GPS almost three years ago. [$]. I use it anytime I am going to an unfamiliar location. The street routing feature is awesome. I never get lost and I'm always on time. I wish I had waited for the prices to come down on the color version with more memory.
