Comments about REI Pack Duffel:
I got this to put my backpack in when I checked it so the straps wouldn't get caught and so I could lock it. It worked wonderfully. I was also able to stick a few extra loose things, like a raincoat, in around my backpack. Then, I used a travel lock to lock the zipper pulls together so my pack would be a little more secure. I did take the shoulder strap off of it before checking it, just to be on the safe side.

Comments about REI Pack Duffel:
This pack was convenient for travel, allows easy transportation of backpack. I also really like the storage feature that allows you to stuff the duffel bag into a built-in zipper pocket for compact storage when not in use. The only potential drawback for airline travel is the carrying strap possibly getting caught. It can be removed or tied together though and the airline people did not seem to think that the strap would be a problem. Overall a convenient way to lug your pack around!

Comments about REI Pack Duffel:
I bought this for my new backpack last summer before I started my 9 month study abroad/travel program through Asia. It's reassuring to have it zipped and locked up whenever I went through airports or trains (some in China require you to have your backpack in a bag). Depending on the safety of our accommodations, I even would lock up my bag during the day while I was out. I have a 50 liter backpack, and this bag was... very large. I didn't mind since I rarely carried it around in it (just put it in right before checking in and take it out as soon as I got it). Carrying my pack in this bag would have been very hard-- sometimes my bag was around 45 lbs and I'm 5'4". Using the shoulder strap was just uncomfortable for that type of use/weight, and it usually would just loosen under the weight, but it wasn't really an issue since my backpack itself is very easy to use even with that much weight. I also never bothered with folding it up back into the pouch... A few other people had bought this same bag for the same reason, and I don't think any of us folded it up. It was much easier to just roll it up and hook it onto our backpacks, so I don't know if its actually that easy.
Buy it to protect your pack, not to carry it around in, and its a good choice.

Comments about REI Pack Duffel:
This bag is a small peace of mind to help ensure your backpack gets to the end of the flight in the same state it starts in. This duffel is great for protecting your backpack straps and belts from snagging and breaking during your travels. The bag easily swallows a 60 to 80L backpack without having yards of extra fabric (compared to the Osprey version). The bag is built of fairly strong denier so I had no worries that it was going to rip even when filled with a 50 lb load. The included handles aren't too ergonomic for carrying but shouldn't ever rip. Besides this bag is best used for inserting your backpack at the airline counter and then immediately pulling it back out at the baggage claim. Folds up fairly small for storage when trekking (~8"x8"x3/4"). The only thing I'd change would be to possibly build out of lighter material to allow it to pack down more, but then you'd probably lose a lot of the durability.

I used this bag to protect my pack and walking poles on a recent trip from Indianapolis to California. My pack and hiking poles fit in the bag with plenty of extra room. The bag seems well made and held up great. Would have given 5 stars but it needs a better and easier to remove carry strap.

Comments about REI Pack Duffel:
I purchased this product to protect my brand new REI pack on a trip to Europe. It completely exceeded my expectations. It is very easy to load and on the way back I was able to fit inside the duffel a few other bags I had acquired during my trip. Can fold it up in about a minute and easily stuffs inside your pack. Can unfold it, load your gear, and have it zipped up in about 30 seconds.
Completely protected my gear and the bag doesn't show any flaws yet.
Only down side is the shoulder strap that won't get very short, but luckily I had read these reviews and took 2 twist ties with me to the airport and twist tied the strap to the handle. Problem solved.
If you're looking to protect your pack (and have room to pack other stuff to/from your destination), this is a small price to pay.

I use this duffel for my Kelty Red Cloud 5600 when I fly. Keeps the pack straps out of the way and protects the pack from the pounding that airline handlers give it. Just the right size, and durable enough to give several years of use.

Comments about REI Pack Duffel:
The REI Pack Duffel is designed to cover a camping/traveling pack when in transit, esp from airport to airport. It is large enough to cover any backpack no matter how much you stuffed it. The duffel protects the pack from damage and keeps it clean and the belts from being caught in transit. Additionally, it prevents the airport staff from taking things off your pack (i.e. hankies, caribbeaners, keychains) and looting through your belt pockets. Additionally, the thick canvas material is very durable and doesn't easily show ware and tear. After use, the duffel folds on to itself and zips into a small pouch. Very convenient. The one downside (and it's a major downsize), the duffel has flimsy carrying straps and his very heavy to carry once the pack is inside; there are no wheels. I believe it was designed with the notion that one would carry the pack in transit to the airport then put the pack inside the duffel but that becomes a hassle with all the coming and goings of traveling. For future design, I would suggest small wheels. All in all, it does the job brilliantly just needs to be more portable once the pack is inside.
