Comments about Montrail Hardrock Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I got this shoe to use as a camp shoe when I take scouts camping. I have another pair of hiking boots for long term hiking, but found them too hot to wear multiple days straight esp in the summer. This shoe is great for the job. Comfortable, but rugged enough for short day hikes and wearing all day.

Comments about Montrail Hardrock Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I originally bought these shoes as trail runners, but after my first run I decided they weren't going work for that. I "reassigned" them to hiking & backpacking, and fell in love with them. As runners, they're too stiff and don't provide a good heel-toe transition; as hikers, they give the right balance between cushioning against rocks, stability & light weight for loads up to 25-30 pounds (as long as you have strong ankles).

Comments about Montrail Hardrock Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
These shoes are lighter than almost every other trail shoe; they are stable with solid underfoot protection; adequate cushioning for ultramarathons; great trail, rock, and snow traction; and they have a great balance of water entry protection vs. ability to dry after river crossings. Be careful to order the correct width.

This is my second pair of hardrocks. I have to order a Wide width because they seem to run a little narrow. I have worn them from light packing, scramble trips to Saturday walks with the kids.

Comments about Montrail Hardrock Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
This shoe has a great, comfortable fit and is a great trail running/light hiking shoe. I saw lots of them worn by ultra-light AT thru-hikers, and heard no complaints. I've worn my own pair through many miles of dirt and gravel running, and lighter hiking in the hills of South Dakota. Once they wear out, I'm going to get another pair.

This shoe is heavy, but offers great stone protection. I find them invaluable on tough, stony conditions like Iron Mountain Trail Run or similar ultras.

Comments about Montrail Hardrock Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
I used two pairs of Montrail Hard Rocks during my A.T. Thru-Hike in 2007 and was extremely pleased with them. I bought my first pair in Damascus, VA and picked up a second pair in Dalton, MA -- over 1000 miles! The first couple of days in them felt as though my feet were rocking from front to back with each step.
In my first pair of shoes, which were another pair of trail runners, I had feet and knee problems. I'm pretty sure I had plantar fasciitis, though I never saw a doctor, but after I got a pair of Hard Rocks, the problem went away. The only problem I had with both pairs was I got blisters on the backs of my feet within the first two weeks of having the shoes. However, once I got past those times, the shoes were great.
Oh yeah -- they dry out very fast. Whenever my shoes got wet I was able to dry them out overnight. Most of the time they were dry in the morning, though there were a few days when they were a little damp but they would quickly dry out when I hiked in them.
I highly recommend this shoe for anybody considering any long distance hiking. I hiked through some pretty tough stretches -- the Pennsylvania rocks, the White Mountains, the Mahoosuc ranges -- and felt very confident with each step along the way.

Comments about Montrail Hardrock Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
This shoe is already well known and regarded, but at the risk of being redundant, I'll pile on. Other than a Chaco sandal, I think it's the most versatile piece of footwear you're going to find at an outdoor store. Montrail has built an exceptionally stable, smooth and light platform for trail running, ultra running, light backpacking and ultralight extended backpacking, some road running and even supportive walking around town. More stable for its weight than any other trail runner I have found, it holds steady with up to 30 lbs on your back, yet doesn't feel clunky on a 3-mile easy breezy trail run. It's even passably smooth on the road (I disagree with an above post about clunky heel-to-toe transition, especially when comparing to something like the Vasque Velocity), and given its mega-stability, it's a comparable and lighter option to motion control road runners like the Brooks Beast. It provides an amazing combination of comfort, cushion and stability for sub-30 lb. backpacking, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to an experienced thru-hiker for the AT, provided they've got 3 or 4 pair lined up for them along the trail. Which leads to the trade-off-- limited durability for intense backpacking use, with its soft, practically wispy non-Vibram outsole and EVA mid-sole. Although monumentally stable, keep in mind it's still built like a running shoe.
Montrail has hit a target with this popular shoe and has smartly put its platform in boots-- the Namche and a soon-to-be-released GTX XCR counterpart-- which I'd recommend looking into as well. Overall, a great unmatchably versatile shoe for ultra-active, ultralight pursuits.

Great trail shoe for those looking for a stable, light, durable, and well cushioned shoe. I run ultra's ranging from 50k-100miles and the Montrail Hardrocks are simply the best when it comes to ultra distance trail marathons.

Comments about Montrail Hardrock Trail-Running Shoes - Men's:
This has been my main shoe for trail running for about two years. I've been very happy with it in every way. I live in Las Vegas, so it's mainly been used in hard packed, sandy and rocky conditions, but I try to get up to the mountains some and have never had a complaint with its traction in wet or even snowy conditions. I'm also a big runner (195 pounds) and I've been happy with the cushion and stability of this shoe. I'm a devotee of the Montrail fit and this shoe is no exception. I recently began wearing custom orthotics. The Hardrock accommodates them easily. I replace my running shoes on a schedule, but my Hardrocks always seem to be in good shape when I replace them. I've put this shoe through a lot of abuse and it always does well.
