Comments about Smith's Diamond Sharpening Stones Combination: Coarse and Fine Grit:
For some reason all the suggestions given to aid my review pertain to shooting, hunting, and law enforcement, thus they are blank. I would not normally choose this sharpener as a self-defense weapon. (: I've used this for about 3 years. I would grade it as Med/fine, not coarse/fine. My small Smiths "medium" diamond stone is more aggressive than this "coarse". Not for creating an edge where there is none, but good for 2nd and 3rd steps. Comfortable grip for a hand-held stone. Too big for hiking field use or essentials kit. If you are not familiar with freehand sharpening, maybe best to learn on a bench stone first, so you have one moving object instead of two.

Comments about Smith's Diamond Sharpening Stones Combination: Coarse and Fine Grit:
This sharpener is used as a home based touchup of my knife edge(s) after a trip in the backcountry or a camping trip.
It works well enough, if you keep your kives in good working order. I've gotten a lot of use out of it.
But nothing beats a diamond stone or a plain old arkansa stone. For the price point, the stone is a better deal and will last longer.
My knives by choice, are fierce tools which can take a beating, will slice, dice, chop, dig, split wood and trench.
For working knives, this really won't do the job well enough.
Keep in mind, that when viewing the knives on REIs' site, none of them are legitimate wilderness utilities.
They are decorative implements, whose use is questionable for the most part. This isn't to say that the selection does not have quality manufacturers.
But I wouldn't be caught dead with the REI selection. They are costume accoutrements meant to impress the uninitiated by virtue of the amount of money one is able to throw away.
Also, you can't sharpen serrated edges with this sharpener. And if you don't know how to properly sharpen a knife, this sharpener is better left in the drawer where you have placed it.

Comments about Smith's Diamond Sharpening Stones Combination: Coarse and Fine Grit:
I have owned one of these for years and it works, but I have found better ones on the market since. The coarse surface does not sharpen as quickly as other diamond hones do. The overall design is way too bulky for the sharpening surface it offers.

Comments about Smith's Diamond Sharpening Stones Combination: Coarse and Fine Grit:
Whenever you need to sharpen a blade whether it be in the kitchen or out camping, this tool works quickly. It sharpened our blades incredibly fast and better than other sharpening tools we have used.
