Comments about Open Country Backpacker's Grid:
I have an old set of grill grates that my father purchased some 30 years prior. They are a wonderful design, when collapsed, fit great next to my collapsible saw. While they have withstood more than the average use and many repairs, they need to be retired.
I purchased two of these grids hoping they would be able to replace my old grates. I was wrong. I ended up taking these to the shop to cut off one of the outer rims, as they are doubled up so that food doesn't roll off. All in all a good idea if only using one, and car camping. For backcountry use they just add too much weight. To my dismay, they are nickel plated rather than stainless steel, which caused me to give up the rust resistance where I cut the metal and repaired welds. It did however take close to 1 lb off the weight between the two of them.
Overall these grates are the best I have found after years of searching. If you have access to cutting torch and welding equipment I recommend cutting one outer rim off to reduce weight.
Design Suggestions:
Stainless Steel to add longevity. SINGLE outer rim to reduce weight and improve pack size. Possibly rounding grate edges rather than adding double rim to reduce potential snagging. Smaller diameter grid wires to reduce weight as well.
