Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Aluminum:
This is a nice little candle lantern that simply works. I have myriad other light sources, but I still pack my little REI candle lantern (in it's little Polartec pouch) as a warm back-up for my campsite.
As for pros, it is reasonably durable, packs compactly, seems to last a long time, and perhaps best of all, allows you to SAFELY use a candle for illumination. Exposed candles are a constant fire danger. The spring mechanism keeps the light at a constant level. Perhaps best of all is that it is simply a warm, soothing glow with a pleasant scent, probably best for travel.
It does however have a few cons, in that it does not give out a whole lot of light (esp in the downward direction, which is what you need in a tent), the candles are non-standard (so usually require proprietary sized refills by REI), and unless you get it on sale, just a bit pricey when compared to what you can get in comparably priced LED or incandescent electric lanterns that arguably perform better. Note: during an emergency like an earthquake, use of candles or open flame of any kind is not recommended, due to the hazards of gas leaks.
I think it would make a good gift item or a stocking stuffer. REI should consider an entire "scented" candle line (pine forest, pumpkin pie, vanilla bean).

Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Aluminum:
I used to use this for years till I replaced it this season for the mini-candle lantern. If you need more than 3-4 hours a night of light then this might be your choice. The candles last about 9 hours. This is probably a good car camping choice as a lantern to hang in your tent. It gives off a nice warm comfy glow in your tent.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Aluminum:
I love these lanterns. They can be a bit temperamental in adjusting, so be patient. Once you figure out how they work, life gets easier. They produce an adequate amount of light, probably not enough to read by. The top gets very hot, very quickly. If you're careful, you can heat water by placing a metal cup on top. I would never recommend using this lantern in a tent.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Aluminum:
Maybe I'm a hopeless romantic, but I love candle lanterns. I think you are better off with new LED technology though. THis candle lantern does not feed the candle very well and thus the flame gets small and does not produce much light. Not enough to read by in a tent.
I still use it though.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Aluminum:
When I was a child I had one of the tea-candle lanterns. I figured it'd be neat to get another one to give us low-level light, particularly for inside the Bus while the kids sleep. Then we wouldn't have to use up unnecessary fuel from our lantern.
I ended up getting REI's brass version of this lantern. Same exact functionality, just golden color instead of silver (or painted red).
The self-adjusting candle worked flawlessly! Such a simple, neat idea. Very easy to light the candle as well as replace it. It's a candle so don't expect lantern-level light output but it is enclosed so you can walk around with it and not worry about the flame getting blown out. The light output is as good as you can get with a candle.
I also bought the REI Candle Lantern Side Reflector (Item # 410139). This does help focus more light forward. Get it.

Comments about REI Candle Lantern - Aluminum:
We bought this before a car camping trip. We also purchased the bees wax candles. It has been a small, light weight, light source to play games or read a book at the camp site. Especially if you are somewhere you can't have a camp fire. It adds some warm glow to the camp site. When you take it apart to put the candle it, we had some trouble putting it back together.
