This is not a reliable product! I do alot of back country backpacking during the winter. I pack appropriately, so the handwarmers are not neccesary for survival. Still, it would be nice to know that on a particularly cold (0 degrees or less) night, I could depend on this product as an extra boost of warmth in my gloves, thrown down my sleeping bag, or to put in my boots over night so they arent a block of ice in the morning. Unfortunately, they are competely unreliable.

Between my friends and I, we have tested at least 50 units of this product and we have found that we only have had total success (meaning product heated up completely) about 30% of the time. The rest of the time the product either heats up to luke warm or not at all.

I gave the product two stars instead of one because when it does heat up properly, it is very effective. Unfortunately, that doesnt happen very often.

I purchased a couple packs of these since my local REI no longer carries the 12 hour hand warmers. I tried them for the first time on a kayaking trip. I took them out of the bag and shook them up until they started warming, but they never really warmed up. I forgot I even had them in my pocket until I put my hands in my pockets later in the day. They were cold. I am very disappointed in these. I really wish my local REI would carry the 12 hours warmers again.

These things fire up in about five minutes, and after about an hour of having them in my gloves, socks, or pockets, I find myself having to take them out they get so hot! I wouldnt go anywhere cold without them.
